Ed Winters is a compassionate activist and vegan educator from the UK, widely known for his viral online content. I’ve been vegan for twelve years and if you’d told me at the beginning of my journey that I would one day see a book about veganism advertised on billboards and by bookstores, I simply wouldn’t have believed you. This is a really thorough well written book I'd strongly recommend it to anyone, I plan to buy a paper copy or two for my own family. Confronting gendered stereotypes about meat-eating will certainly help. A US study released last November in the journal Appetite found that conformity (or otherwise) to traditional gender roles was still a good predictor of people’s meat consumption and openness to vegetarianism for environmental reasons. To not know is one thing (very very few are born vegan) but if anyone can read this and not be spurred in to action then they are not the kind of person I would want within my circles.Knowing already how good Ed is as a speaker and debater, I was placing high expectations on this book, and I'm glad to say that they have not only been met, but also greatly exceeded. Ser vegano es un privilegio. Un privilegio de ser consciente de lo que comes y por qué lo comes, un privilegio económico, un privilegio familiar (si eres joven y vives con tu familia, esta debe estar de acuerdo en de golpe cambiar toda la compra semanal por ti). La mayoría de gente come carne por conveniencia, no por ser una panda de psicópatas a los que les gusta matar. Incluso la gente que se hizo vegana y lo dejó de ser, no lo ha hecho por ser malas personas. Este libro expone muy bien las razones por las que hacerse vegano es algo positivo para la salud, los animales y el planeta (argumento que sigue siendo el que más me gusta), pero lo hace algo agresivamente. Me empecé este libro sin saber quién era Ed Winters ni de qué iba, pero me apetecía leer un non-fiction de veganismo (ya fuera a favor o en contra del veganismo). Ha sido una total experiencia que, sin duda, repetiré.

And now I want to talk a little bit about how Ed has impacted my life. His words at the London Animal Rights March in 2019 are a large part of the reason I decided to dedicate the rest of my life to the movement. I remember sitting on the floor of Parliament Square, surrounding by thousands of other vegans, and coming to the realisation that if we want change then we must work for change. We cannot be silent. The animals need us. It’s no surprise that many people prefer to think their food comes from farms where animals frolic on lush pastures. The reality challenges meat-eaters’ view of themselves as compassionate, or at least not wantonly cruel. People claim to love animals but are happy to pay for their slaughter and mistreatment. There's actually nothing traditional or happy about their farms where they must artificially inseminate and selectively breed their animals then inject them with antibiotics and various growth factors while feeding them an unnatural diet (they traditionally ate grass they evolved to eat) before being slaughtered (farmers prefer using the term harvested) and processed into palatable food.You can love 1 animal and kill another. This also happens between humans, I care for my family but I don't send my money to stop suffering, to other humans else where which I could do so I am indirectly supporting suffering by not elevating it. It is worth pointing out that nearly all farms are considered family farms, including the huge factory farms. The meat, dairy, and egg industries market their products as coming from traditional family farms by naming their farms Willow and Happy, a ploy to convince you to buy from them. Ed has used his vast knowledge regarding meat & dairy production to create a must read book for everyone, vegan and non-vegan alike. His arguments are compelling and grounded in facts and logic. This is Vegan Propaganda (And Other Lies the Meat Industry Tells You) presents an indisputable case for veganism and shows us that there is a far better way of feeding the planet. Is it not odd that someone who smashes a car window to rescue a dog on a hot day is viewed as a hero but someone who rescues a piglet suffering on a farm is a criminal? If you want to listen to a decent book around global resources I'd recommend "There is no planet B" that has a far more factual approach to the problems we face as a planet.

Ed Winters, also known as Earthling Ed, is among the kindest and most sympathetic vegan activists. He does not make excuses and always has facts to debunk wonky claims against veganism. His calm demeanour and composure, even in the most heated debates, are most impressive and inspiring for new and longtime vegans alike.
