She has the knack of combining character development with a fast-paced and meaty plot, plus giving keen attention to detail. Since she vanished; someone has been sending him bizarre anonymous notes about ritual sacrifice; quoting Shakespeare and the Bible. Her descriptions and developments of characters come very much alive giving me the urge to know these people whether I like them or not. It has to do with the permanent lack of mobile signal in the opening scenes at Broughton Sea’s End, then a little later, there is reception. Dr Ruth Galloway must discover who the victim was; and who put him there; in this atmospheric mystery for fans of Val McDermid and Ann Cleeves.

But now death has found her; with the news that her long-time friend Dan Golding has been killed in a house fire. I continue to find Ruth's character appealing as the 'ordinary' person, come-hero and Elly Griffiths' writing remains fast-paced and entertaining.When carbon dating proves that the child's bones predate the home and relate to a time when the house was privately owned; Ruth is drawn ever more deeply into the case. This is the 30th book, but considering Alex has survived "Kill Alex Cross" before, chances are he survives this one. The plot merges Druid history/myth, archeology and a murder/mystery that is both intriguing and tragic. These books are also not expensive so it is possible to purchase the entire series at one time; this would also be the best way to receive a discount, too.

As the story unfolds, there are several drawbacks, imo: there are similarities with book 1, including the murder of children and Ruth being stalked and intimidated around her isolated home; the moral dilemma of the Nelson/Ruth/Michelle situation is handled lightly, which seems odd; and, there are a couple of unlikely plot points which I found hard to swallow … hence, 3 stars.Ruth Galloway lives in the peaceful land she has known all of her life and the peaceful land she enjoys everyday. It’s been only a few months since archaeologist Ruth Galloway found herself entangled in a missing persons case, barely escaping with her life. These two deaths could be from natural causes but DCI Harry Nelson isn't convinced; and it is only a matter of time before Ruth and Nelson cross paths once more.
