This Clippy isn't exactly Clippy, an old user interface assistant for Microsoft, but he's very clearly inspired by Microsoft’s version given references to guys like Phil Gates or Microsoft products like Cortana. Can Microsoft sue for this? I mean, Delaney didn’t even bother to change the guy’s last name to like, Phil Bates or whatever, he kept the Gates… Conquered by Clippy is a 4000 word short story featuring sexual situations with digital assistants. It’s for super mature audiences only.

Look, I know that this is r/romancelandia, but I'm not sure if I would classify this as true Romance. Maybe something like "romance-adjacent parody" or "romantic satire" might work?The support showed up in real life, too. At client dinners, on trains. To me, the cover of the book also doesn't read like something that would line up with the rest of the Romance genre. Love, Laugh Lich by Kate Prior is a book I'd say is Romance proper yet is also funny in nature, and it features a clinch between the MMC and FMC. This book's cover has a woman in her underwear, Clippy, and text/colour choices that don't remind me of Romance. In 1987, just over a decade after Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft, she started in Redmond. Four buildings surrounded “Lake Bill” at the HQ that would transform a small farming town 15 miles east of Seattle into a big-tech hub. Is Clippy, the actual office assistant, canonically male according to Microsoft? I tried looking this up and saw that it (he?) was often gendered as male, but as far as I can tell Clippy is genderless. Hobson, the program manager, traveled around the world to test different characters for the new Office release. After all those focus groups, a robot, cat, dog, globe, and several other assistants would emerge as the original roster of assistants in Office 97. But many users never knew they had options; Clippy was the default.

LD: I get erotically excited when I read this for several reasons. Number one, it shows that Christie is a strong woman who gets off on dominating sentient objects, which is the type of woman that I am attracted to because I often imagine myself as a sturdy, non-living object, like perhaps a stylish IKEA chair... Today the artificial intelligence of Cortana, Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant can constantly get smarter. Clippy was only as bright as the next edition of Office. Today's short story is Conquered by Clippy: An Erotic Short Story by Leonard Delaney, featuring a human FMC and a giant living paperclip MMC that's definitely not inspired by the Microsoft Clippy. Mm hmm. Definitely not inspired by Microsoft, a giant corporation that can probably sue Delaney and his publisher into the ground.

Behind a one-wa y mirrorin the bowels of Microsoft’s Redmond campus, Karen Fries watched yet another volunteer cry. LD: That’s ridiculous. As a straight male who enjoys thinking about female humans, I would never be turned on by a male paperclip. What does turn me on is a strong woman banging a paperclip. I like Clippy—maybe I even love him—as a complex character in a deep and satisfying story. But when I write the sex scenes, my mind’s eye does not focus on his glowing metal poker of a schlong. As a writer, I do have to picture it in great detail, but I take no erotic pleasure in it. MH: But this isn’t your intellectual property, right? Microsoft is bound to slap you with a cease and desist eventually. Are you going to fight them, or take your bags of money and disappear?

LD: Number two, it subtly equates Christie's breasts with the technology that she so loves—“perfectly engineered”—hinting at the coming merging of man and machine through embedded microchips. And three, breasts are really great. Have you seen a breast? It’s really great to look at and touch at.
