Wibke Brueggemann keeps up the laugh quota from her debut though this one is, well, way more horny, and funnily so. It is also awkward in the best way, giving a flawed, entertaining protagonist. Cupid's Revenge touches on big ideas from evolution right through to Kerplunk and makes the fleeting act of holding hands the most perfect gesture of love. this author does really great realistic teenage protagonists - Tilly is fun and snarky, but also immature and self-absorbed. She isn't cruel, but she can be thoughtless and hurt others without meaning to, and obviously with the plot of this book, you know she handles the situation with her best friend crushing on her love interest badly, but it's so believable how she wanted to avoid confrontation and couldn't work out a better way to handle it.

The grief was written so well in this book, how the loss of one of her close friends affected her. Tilly mentioned several times about death, how her Grandad could die and she would be the one there to find him or when her best friend Teddy was skateboarding she freaks out about him almost getting hit by a car. It's in the subtle things and the pain and panic are really brought out front and center. Seeing Tilly heal and not see Grace was really nicely done. This cute YA book is about a theatre group who are doing a variety play to raise money for acting. The main character, Tilly (Matilda) joins up with her BFF, Teddy (Theodore) who is only joining up because he knows the girl, Katherine Cooper-Bunting is auditioning and begs Tilly to come along and help him get the girl. But Katherine is off-limits. The only thing more important than Tilly’s feelings for someone she just met is not hurting Teddy, whose heart has been broken in the past. But in saying that, this book is definitely cute. It's #sexpositive. It has queer characters, including lesbians, gays and non-binary characters. The theatre world was cute. i went into this expecting mainly a romance, but it is so much more than that (although the romance is amazing). teddy and tilly’s friendship is so nice, even when they fight at some points. and the storyline with tilly’s grandpa broke my heart, but i loved the moments of happiness with him.

The story has some cute moments, especially the found family aspect of the theatre group. I loved how they all loved Tilly's Granddad when she brought him along to rehearsals. The relationship between Tilly and Katherine was also cute, but the one thing I didn't like about it, which is why I am only giving it 3 and a half stars, is the way Tilly handled it with Teddy, and what she told Robin. Katherine had every right to be upset, and I wish it was dealt with a little more than just saying it and then moving on like nothing happened. Most of what I remember is food related words that I googles along the way. I had myself giggling on how some words sounds odd to me but I'm sure it's a two-way street with comment USA terms. I opened my mouth, and she did the same, and then we were properly kissing with tongues and everything, and I thought how she tasted of strawberries, and that I hadn't been that physically hot in all my life. Like, my skin was on fire. And I wanted to get inside her, like, deeper and deeper, and she seemed to want the same, because she was pulling me closer and closer and closer, and I thought my head would explode. Or I would faint. Or just die."If Shakespeare had never been born, the most famous evil character to have come out of Elizabethan Drama might have been Bacha, the despicable widow and duchess of Beaumont and Fletcher’s Cupid’s Revenge, rather than Iago or Richard III. The primary lesson of this straight-forward tragedy, however, is never neglect the gods, for when the gods get angry, humanity is helpless. Overall, this was just an amazing read and I'm happy to have read it. Definitely one of my favorite sapphic reads of the year. Cupid's Revenge signifies a fresh direction for the pair as they refocus on their roots and training in choreography. I absolutely adore the humor and the overall writing style of this book. The pace was great, the plot was entertaining, the characters had good personalities, and the setting was portrayed quite nicely. there is also some amazing queer rep in this, from tilly who has always known she’s a lesbian, and katherine who has recently discovered her sexuality. there is also an older gay couple which i loved, a gay immigrant who’s family moved for his safety, and a non binary character who is easily accepted.

Covid even held a big role in the book as well. I can tell the author may of wrote this during a tough time for us all. It made me realize that a whole generation of kids were going through the woes of puberty during a scary time in our world's history.I usually enjoy a story surrounding theater, especially if it's sapphic. This one was...a journey. The best aspect was Tilly's grandfather and the way the author handled his dementia. Tilly's obsession with Katherine is weird throughout most of the book. I didn't understand the attraction between them at all. It literally felt like Tilly wanted her just because Teddy did. I liked the rest of the theater group, especially Robin, but it was weird that Tilly only referred to two of the actors based on their audition piece even after she definitely should have learned their names. I did appreciate the dynamic between Tilly and her parents and the struggle she goes through to have them be present. The essence of awkwardness and discomfort that comes with discovering and knowing who you are, but not knowing how to use that when it comes to not just your love life, but also your personal life, is wonderful and makes the story seem so much more real and raw. It makes the characters feel more like people you know, as opposed to just fictional characters in a book. Naturally, she trips and falls for her best friend’s crush, the girl no one expected to be a lesbian too. Though just how long are they able to keep their stolen kisses a secret? The thing is, when you’ve been friends with Theodore Booker forever, you kind of don’t question these things. Because you being fueled by anything apart from Haribo is literally disturbing. Also, you’re wearing a Care Bears T-shirt.”
