These new recruits are taken from the nomadic Clans of Medusa. Only those of great physical and mental strength are recruited and during the recruitment candidates have their weaknesses purged from them. [9a] Regardless of origin, those that survive the initial selection process spend their first decade in Clan Dorrvok and train in the desolated proving grounds of Ooranus on Medusa. Even fewer survive this grueling process, and recruits are treated with extreme disregard. Infighting amongst the Aspirants and Initiates is common and even encouraged, with Iron Hands sergeants often stopping training exercises just to turn brothers on each other or enflame rivalries. Even when elevated to full Battle-Brother a Marines chance of survival improves little. Believing themselves to be weeding out the weak and unworthy, raw recruits are often given near-suicidal assignments that would usually be given to veterans in other Chapters. [63b] Following the Horus Heresy, the Iron Hands were in a state of disarray and still reeling fron their near-destruction. [53a] The remnants of the Legion were split up into smaller Chapters, with known descendants of the Iron Hands at this time being the Red Talons and the Brazen Claws. [11] Those who were not split off were reorganized into the Iron Hands Chapter. While many Imperial factions bayed for blood and rushed to vent their fury upon their betrayers, the Iron Hands Chapter gathered its strength on Medusa for a conclave known as " the Tempering". There, it was decided that no single individual would command the Iron Hands again. Instead, the Iron Council would oversee the Chapter. [22a] [53a]Like the other Loyalist Astartes Legions, the Iron Hands would later be divided up after the Horus Heresy into multiple different Chapters, as required by the Codex Astartes, although one Chapter of the original Legion remained known as the Iron Hands and is described below.

Primarch– ( Independant character , Master of the Legion , Eternal Warrior , Fear , Adamantium Will , Fleet , Fearless , It Will Not Die )When Manus' hands were coated with a silvery metal that melted from the Silver Wyrm's body, that material was absorbed into his skin and became a part of his body rather than injuring him. This would accord with the way necrodermis has been observed to act by Imperial scholars, though this remains only conjecture. Ferrus Manus refuses to answer questions of his experience, claiming that nothing happened that matters. He leads his forces into the jungle, in response to a request from help from Vulkan. In another place entirely, the two Eldar rue their failure, but take solace in the fact that even if the Gorgon falls, there is another who will suit their purpose... Forgebreaker began as a project by Fulgrim to build the perfect weapon for his brother while the Gorgon did the same. In the end, when Fulgrim and Manus had finished their respective weapons, neither could agree on which was the best with the Phoenix claiming that Ferrus' Fireblade was the best and the Gorgon claiming that Fulgrim's Forgebreaker was, in fact, the greatest. In the end, they each gifted their weapon to each other, with Fulgrim receiving Fireblade and Ferrus receiving Forgebreaker, the start of a bond of brotherhood closer than any other two primarchs that lasted until the outbreak of the Horus Heresy. Instead it would take the Legion's third large-scale engagements -- the invasion of the planet designated 02-34 (or the "Battle of Rust" as it would be commonly known to Imperial military historians) -- to show the X th Legion's particular martial gifts for what they were, and would do so with emphatic force. The Iron Hands chose to isolate themselves from many of their fellow Adeptus Astartes Chapters after the Second Founding and slowly became bitter recluses, wielding their anger as a protective shield against a universe of growing weakness and insanity. It soon came to pass that none were immune from their ire. The Traitors had renounced their oaths and turned against their brothers, but the Loyalists had allowed it to happen, and the Emperor had fallen. Nevertheless, a battle-brother of the Iron Hands that has reached several standard centuries of service is likely to appear almost entirely mechanical, every visible scrap of flesh replaced with gleaming, oiled and burnished steel. A few standard centuries more and the warrior's biological body might consist of little more than his brain and his major internal organs. It is said that some Iron Hands, those that survive the rigours of war and their own hate-fuelled self-mutilation, are no more than a brain encased in a ceramite shell. In Codex Supplement: Iron Hands (8th Edition) it is stated that Kardan Stronos exists as the official Chapter Master, but like his predecessors was elected by the Iron Council. It is stated that the Iron Hands Chapter Master does not serve for life. Who is Ferrus Manus?

The brotherhood shared by the Primarchs Fulgrim and Ferrus Manus, the Phoenician and the Gorgon, was well known in the Imperium at the time of the Great Crusade, as the two superhuman leaders formed an instant connection upon their first meeting. Originally known as the Storm Walkers [31] or Stormwalkers, [22a] the legion was created during the latter days of the Unification Wars on Terra. Recruitment bases at this time were spread widely all across the planet, but the warlike cultures of Albia in particular provided effective initiates for the Legion. The Legion's first instance of recorded combat was in the Sol system against a Mutant warband known as Scythers. Shortly thereafter they exterminated the Xenos Lyasx on the world of Oberath. While the Legion was victorious in both actions, they did not yet seem to specialize in any area of warfare. It was only during the invasion of the Ork-held Planet 02-34 (designated 'Rust') that the Legion's effectiveness in utilizing slow-moving mass firepower became apparent. [21a] Ferrus Manus

The granting of this boon was the embodiment of a new pact between the Warmaster and the Iron Warriors' primarch, a gift from Horus to Perturabo intended to symbolise Perturabo and the Iron Warriors' newfound allegiance to the Warmaster rather than the Emperor. Fools claimed that Forgebreaker had sealed the pact between Horus and the Iron Warriors, but only Perturabo knew it was Horus' forgiveness for the massacre his Legion had perpetrated against the population of Olympia that truly bound the Iron Warriors to Horus Lupercal.
