A specialist garden building supplier, we deliver log cabins, climbing frames and other timber garden building products throughout the UK. Chris took on the challenge and, with the help of a friend, built his Severn W5.0m x D3.0mlog cabin. Ventilation and circulation of fresh air is also important for the wellbeing of you and your garden building and helps to maintain a relaxed and comfortable environment inside. Flyscreens for windows give effective protection so you don’t have the annoyance of flies and other creepy crawlies.

In line with this, we preference products certified to the standards of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification). Continue to lay down the felt, and nail down with even spaces as you go through. Overlap the adjoining layers by 200mm, and seal those joints with felt adhesive. Once laid, nail the edges down. It is the perfect material for the job, especially when comparing to cheaper pine and OSB board found in the market. Our floorboards create a strong surface with an attractive appearance. Whether you opt to build your product yourself, don’t be afraid to tighten the odd bolt here and there. Your product is a life improving investment, so it’s only right to give it some love and care from time to time. Make sure that it’s properly treated before the rainy months, and you make adjustments to doors and window frames, when needed.

As you come to the final steps of your Dunster House log cabin build, you may be wondering what the best method is to felt the roof? All our sealed units conform to BS EN 1279 standards. This standard covers the requirements for insulating glass units, including thermal and sound insulation. The sealed units are tested to show that they will not suffer from any form of condensation within the unit.

Where possible, Dunster House are committed to procuring wood products that have been certified against credible, internationally recognised standards for good forest management, to ensure that material originates from well managed forests. We design all our products with self-assembly in mind, we realise that this can still be quite an intimidatingtask. We, therefore, provide easy to follow step-by-step instructions. Our YouTube Channelalso has some really handy installation videos and our helpful Customer Service team are on hand for any queries you may have along the way. Imagine the sense of satisfaction you’d feel by looking out into your garden, from your beautiful log cabin, knowing that you did it all by yourself! There are several options available when looking at how to keep your log cabin warm. Firstly, if you are only planning to use your log cabin occasionally, we would just recommend putting in a small electric heater in the cabin. Usually you would turn that on 20 minutes before you are going to use it to kill of the chill. You do not have to be an expert at DIY to build a Dunster House garden building, as we do provide you with comprehensive pictorial instructions. Also, if you prefer video tutorials, we do have a selection of videos on YouTube which will support you in building your product. We are here to lead you step by step through the felting of your roof. The process of felting an apex roof is ever so slightly different to a pent as it is pointed rather than a sloping roof. So make sure you are following the correct instructions for your model!Unlike most log cabin companies that fit their products with either plastic glazing such as styrene, acrylic and Perspex or shed-spec glass alternatives such as 3mm horticultural glass we don’t. We break the mould by only using 4mm toughened glass, as we feel this is the most durable and secure in comparison to the rest – trust us, we’ve tested it. With a Dunster House log cabin, it is best to lay a plastic waterproof membrane (not supplied) over the roof, which is then to be secured down with a staple gun in intervals of around 20mm. Cut the excess membrane leaving a 5mm - 10mm overhang. We totally understand that DIY is not for everyone and it can be very overwhelming to start building your own garden product. Therefore, you may want to consider getting in touch with a local carpenter or handyman to install it for you.

Add a flyscreen to the windows of your garden building, so you can benefit from letting the fresh air in while keeping those pesky insects out, without restricting visibility. An insect screen will allow you to still view out of the window to survey your surroundings, watch nature and look out at the beauty of your garden. Due to the unique design of a Dunster House product, in the vast majority of cases our garden buildings can be installed without the need for planning permission. On pressure-treated timbers, you may notice some subtle striation marks. These marks sometimes appear during the drying process of timbers. Fear not! In time, the marks will begin to fade as the sun starts to lighten the wood.

Next, move onto adding the actual superfelt to the roof. You want to start off by rolling it out onto the ground and cutting into long strips which are to be horizontally placed across the roof. If two separate felt pieces are required to connect, we suggest overlapping by 200mm. Allow the felt to overhang off the roof by approximately 30mm, and start nailing down at around 200mm centers with clout nails. It’s always nice to be able to throw open the windows of your garden room to enjoy a warm summer breeze or cooling air. With the addition of a flyscreen mesh, you can enjoy the warm weather without worrying about unwanted insects getting in. Keep those flying insects from buzzing around as you try to work in your garden office or relax in your summer house. When the felt has reached the ridge, fold over a length of felt to cover both sides of the upper layers by 200mm or more, seal the joints and nail together. Nail the felt on each side of the ridge. To ensure the very best quality, we only use slow-grown White Spruce Timber, which is harvested in cold climates to ensure solid, dense log rings. This gives the wood superior strength and longevity, and also a much more consistent colour than the likes of Pine. I found construction straightforward and completed the whole task alone”.The difference between shingles and roof felt is down to the materials used and the process in which are made. Roof felt is made from an advanced polyester formula whereas shingles come from fibre based bitumen. Although shingles are higher quality than roof felt, not all garden building roof styles are suitable for shingles.
