And that's how a good horror should operate. KING OF THE ANTS doesn't sugar-coat the violence, but it also never allows you to become numb to it. The story begins with a small ant, which is one of 11,000 species of ants. When the sun shine through, it comes another busy day. The film's direction by Stuart Gordon is also worth noting. Gordon is an experienced horror director, and he brings his expertise to King of the Ants. The movie is shot in a stark, realistic style that emphasizes the bleakness of the story. Gordon doesn't shy away from showing the violence and gore that is an inevitable part of the film's plot, but he also doesn't rely on it to carry the movie. I've read fuming comments here in the style of "how on earth such normal boy is able to become a killer? This movie is bad!" What turns our stomachs is that his victim is innocent. The scene of the killing is horrifying but what makes it unbearable is that we know that Crawly knows he is killing an honest man. We don't feel so uncomfortable anymore when Crawly takes his revenge.Knowing nothing about this movie except that it was directed by Stuart Gordon, I was expecting something along the lines of a 50s-style monster movie, but with tons of gore. Boy, was I surprised when I popped in that disc and was confronted with this brutal tale of murder for money, double crossing scumbags and bloody retribution. With that anecdote in mind, the obvious first question is: so just how dark and violent and depraved is the scenario, anyway? And the answer is: not that much. More violent films get made without incident all the time. Still, it would be wrong to deny just how much of a nasty piece of work King of the Ants is, with its world full of completely awful people, and with a casual roughness to its portrayal of violent murder and other sordid content that absolutely does feel unsafe. It's a grimy film, with that griminess amplified by the crummy production value that The Asylum enforced on Gordon and his crew: the film looks filthy, to go along with the filthiness of the characters' souls. Later on, however, Meruem began to grudgingly respect a human girl named Komugi, eventually even growing to care for her deeply. With this change in heart, Meruem started to question the differences between Ants and mankind and battled with his identity as half-human and half-insect, questioning the nature of violence and strength as true power. After his interactions with Komugi and his fight against Netero, Meruem began to see humans as incredible beings with immense potential through their tenacity in breaking their own limits. He showed great respect and complete admiration for Netero, viewing his abilities and fighting style as truly magnificent, and constantly praised him throughout their battle, referring him as a rare example of a human who has transcended his limitations and the very pinnacle of human capabilities. Because of this change in perspective, Meruem no longer considered farming humans for food and instead suggested the co-existence of humans and Ants, with humans being selected and controlled for quality. Meruem shares traits with some of the main villains from the Dragon Ball series. Meruem's appearance vaguely resembles Frieza's (namely, the deltoids and shins being purple), and more greatly mirrors Cell's (his hands, tail & color scheme of green & purple). His characterization is possibly inspired by the villains of the Dragon Ball series as well. Meruem's initial belief that his natural strength gave him the right to lord over the human race, as well as him killing his subordinates and treating them as disposable commodities, made him similar to Frieza (who did the same, and sought dominion over the whole universe). Like Cell, he had an interest in testing his abilities and sought improvement; as such, he challenged those who were the best in their field like Netero and Komugi (similar to how Cell started the Cell Games). He was also born to be an ultimate being, much like how Cell was born from the collection of the mightiest fighters in the Dragon Ball series, at the time. Also like Cell, Meruem nearly perished in a massive explosion, only to return in a more powerful state. Meruem's relationship to Komugi is also reminiscent of Majin Buu's relationship to Mr. Satan; a supremely more powerful character who is reined in by someone significantly weaker than them. Buu's change of character also starts with a meeting with a blind person too, similar to Meruem's meeting with Komugi. I couldn't avoid relating it to the most disturbing novel I've ever read: "Lord of the Flies" (William Golding, 1954) I won't go into details, but suffice to say that both this movie and the book deal with the dark side of human nature and both have perturbing effects on our minds and consciences. Those who are familiar with the book will know what I mean.
