This story is brilliant for day time reading when you want to engage your child in the actions and play together. For this reason I doubt it would be any good as a bedtime story as the actions would get the child excited, but during the day I can just see them having so much fun. Talk about the items inside, encourage the child to touch them, pick them up, (maybe simulate a bird feeding), have them feel the feathers on their cheeks, palms and souls of their feet. You can also download icebreaker questions to help get your discussion started, and a social media guide to show how you can share your reading with others online.For a more contemporary feeling though a timeless fantasy try The Secret Keepers (Chicken House), by Mysterious Benedict Society author Trenton Lee Stewart, with atmospheric illustrations by Diana Sudyka. Cousins' illustrations are lovely, breaking down each bird into its simplest, most recognizable shapes. Lively, colourful birds fill each page beautifully as she illustrates them flying, hopping, pecking, swooping, singing and running in a charming book that leads perfectly to bedtime.
