I’ve worn these shoes now for a few weeks so I’m fairly comfortable commenting on how the FootJoy HyperFlex Carbons are pretty much faultless. I’ve worn them on dry links turf at Furness golf club in Cumbria, and on my home course of Sand Moor in West Yorkshire and the performance has been excellent. Testing was carried out over two rounds in cold and dry conditions on my home heathland course. As you would expect from Ecco, the G5 was extremely comfortable straight out of the box. Although I’m not wild about the appearance of the boa, it really did give a close fit. And there is a whole load of hidden technology which combines to offer comfort, stability and rotational support. I cannot believe how strong and stable I feel in the swing wearing them. I’d go so far as to say these shoes have managed to wake me up and help me escape the spikeless shoe cult and have opened the door of proper golf shoe performance. Nearly all golf shoes will either be fully waterproof or offer some kind of water resistance, and this is important as real die-hard golfers play in every weather condition. Having wet feet for 4 hours is not and will never be fun.

The ZG23s are certainly eye-catching and the “cloud white and lucid blue”, as the box describes them, are perhaps not the colourway I would have chosen, but it’s OK because I’ve got a lovely Adidas Classic Club midlayer in a similar colour. And as Ian Poulter always says: “Look good, feel good, play good.” But the ZG23 proved just as comfortable when walking the fairways as they did skipping up and down my stairs on my several tea runs throughout the day. How good the shoe looks is of course subjective to personal style, but is important to any player. Do you prefer an athletic-looking shoe, or are you more traditional? Does your shoe offer on-course off-course style or do you want shoes purely for the course? Does the style of shoe you like have the best color options for your golfing wardrobe?
