Clearly the stars of the piece are R. Lee Ermey's Gunnery Sergeant, who basically spends the first half of the movie shouting, and Vincent D'Onofrio's beleaguered sap Private Pyle. They dominate the highly memorable first half of the movie with some electric dialogue - Ermey's alone including some of the most quotable lines in movie history. These are fierce performances that echo throughout the movie, and overshadow the latter half, where Matthew Modine and a young Adam Baldwin take centre stage to face the horrors of urban guerrilla warfare. Both Modine and Baldwin deliver some of their best work, but it still pales in comparison to the opening scenes. effort shows a similar amount of care. This is, quite simply, a terrific presentation of a film that's rarely pretty, whether due to its subject matter or due to a tighter overall appearance that routinely feels more film-like and stable. Things improve dramatically whenever the boys venture outdoors, There are so many things wrong with that stance that I would have trouble finding where to begin. But I will say this: Each of these films is its own world, and each is very much a product of its director's style and vision, and each does different things. "Apocalypse Now" is Francis Ford Coppola's take on the war, and it's the most surreal and deliberately absurd. Michael Cimino's "The Deer Hunter" benefited from its significant focus on the home front during the war -- while the director did present the trauma suffered by soldiers, he also succeeded in depicting the hurts the war inflicted on loved ones, families, even an entire community. Oliver Stone's "Platoon" was, oddly, the most "realistic" of the four films, and in my opinion the least imaginative, though I still think it's a fine film. It's here that the film's HDR enhancement begins to take control, lending a more refined and controlled palette to some of the film's most famousrecent viewings, combined with the obvious visual strengths of this 4K transfer, have pushed me slightly over to the other side. I do agree with people who say the first act of this film is so impressive and overwhelming that the rest of the picture can seem anti-climactic. Much of the reason lies with R. Lee Ermey, whos portrayal of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman is one of the most unforgettable performances in cinema history. Hartman's view, apparently, is that boot camp should be as hellish as possible, the better to prepare these would-be Marines from what they'll face in Vietnam. And the irony is he's right; it's just that he takes it to such an extreme that it results in two tragic deaths. Prior to that, though, Hartman unleashes upon his trainees a nonstop stream of profanity, verbal abuse, physical punishment and general humiliation. Warner Bros. already did an exceptional job with 2001 and The Shining's 4K restorations, so it's no surprise that their third For starters detail is excellent, promoting a cleaned up image that, but for a smattering of early shots, does not appear to have had too heavy an application of DNR scrubbing (there are a couple of mid-range shots where the faces look a little bit too clean), and still has a nice texture to it commensurate to the filming style.
