The Czech music specialist John Tyrrell has observed that, despite the casual way in which The Bartered Bride's libretto was put together, it has an intrinsic "Czechness", being one of the few in Czech written in trochees (a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed one), matching the natural first-syllable emphasis in Czech. [10] Composition [ edit ] Bedřich Smetana was a Czech composer who pioneered the development of a musical style that became closely identified with his country's aspirations to independent statehood. He has been regarded in his homeland as the father of Czech music. Internationally he is best known for his opera The Bartered Bride and for the symphonic cycle Má vlast ("My Homeland"), which portrays the history, legends and landscape of the composer's native Bohemia. It contains the famous symphonic poem "Vltava", also popularly known by its German name "Die Moldau" (in English, "The Moldau"). The circus perfomer Esmerelda (Amanda Squitieri) entertains villagers in the Paris Opera production of The Bartered Bride.

Designer Kevin Knight created delightful Village Hall and pub sets that were full of quirky period detail with lighting designer Howard Hudson’s subtle illuminations and use of the ambient light from the wonderfully transparent Garsington Pavilion giving the show a warm glow.
