It’s the easiest and quickest way to achieve a realistic antique metal finish, and it’s an enjoyable process too! Amaco’s Rub 'n Buff Metallic Finishes are great for adding finishing touches to wood, plaster, pottery, metal, leather, or gessoed surfaces. European Gold Rub 'n Buff is a cool, light gold wax-metallic finish that is perfect for antiquing, stenciling and other craft projects.

I’d use a couple layers of some type of top coat over it and am not sure it would hold up to the heavy use of a seat… but the legs should be fine. I used Rub n Buff to make this cheap light fixture look like a more expensive version from Pottery Barn.

When testing out these colors, I made the rookie mistake of not sanding first like I normally do, so it made the “buffing” step next to impossible and resulted in a chunky, terribly textured, dull finish. And of course, you’ll need the object you’ll be transforming along with a paper plate, paper towel or any clean surface to blend the Rub ‘n Buff. I have been using antique gold but it is much darker than I want to use on restoring an old chandelier, this blog has enabled me to choose the correct gold for this project, thanks for the info much appreciated! I was still able to see how the colors looked though, and that was really my main goal in this little experiment, so I can refer back to it in future projects.

Of the five golds, my favorites are Rub n Buff Antique Gold and European Gold, but that’s just my preference. Rub onto clean, dry, or previously painted surfaces or on post-fired ceramics with a gloved finger or soft cloth, then gently buff to a beautiful luster. I want to turn a reproduction Louis Philippe mirror into a more realistic looking antique and this helped me narrow it down.Like you said, it is perfect for bringing out details and for adding a touch of glam here and there. I want to make a mirror that is kind of just a grey/tan plastic wood grain finish look much more silvery (think tiara) and was wondering what would be the best product to use? It didn’t make as much difference in that way as I’d thought it would, nor did having a light, midtone, or dark starting surface. The application of Rub ‘n Buff is unlike anything I’ve used before (different than paint, wax, or gel) and requires a certain technique to get the aged look just right. I used antique gold Rub and Buff on my chrome kitchen hardware and I love the warmth and character it added to the space!

There is a little see-through with the black paint – multiple coats of product would make it more opaque.Rub 'n Buff is ideal for restoring cherished antiques,stenciling, frame finishing,antiquing, home decor, restoration and craft projects.

So, if you have a rough surface but want a smooth finish, then you might want to sand to start with a smooth surface, but that is up to you and not necessary. Rub n Buff doesn’t require a primer, but it does help to sand any smooth surfaces first to give it “grip”.Normally, I would use my finger but for sample purposes, I did use gloves as to not mix any of the colors.
