The story is quite convoluted, but there is a clear maturity to it. It jumps between points in time that have no real connection, so you are effectively reading four wildly different stories featuring original characters in believable settings, each drawn in its own style. Bottom line is that the story is good, but you have to be a fan of this particular niche of supernatural. I'm sure it can be argued that the flow of the story could have been handled differently to make it more accessible for the ordinary reader. I say give it a try, you never know if it's going to be your cup of tea. Ambitious, tense, explosive: this genre-blurring whodunnit travels time to visit four detectives investigating the same murder – in different eras. Where does that come from? Somebody tell me!! I assume it is something commonplace that I just don't know. I like intertextual clues-y books, I teach English, but I had no idea here. Yes, there is! The official trailer for the series dropped on 12 October, where we get a proper look at the genre-bending mystery thriller. And. of course, the incredible acting from the legend that is Stephen Graham. This may remind you of some beloved and equally complex streaming television mini-series - - the weird, vague ones that hold your attention in spite of it all. I loved the premise of BODIES. There’s a weird mystery here, which connects each era - - the mutilated dead body of a one-eyed man. Such a novel idea, to tell four separate tales with this linking device. Also, four artists who are completely different from each other, altering their styles to suit the tenor of the scene and time their segment takes place in. Spencer writes the segments differently, further distinguishing each by having the main characters provide some of the narration in the text boxes and revealing their idiosyncrasies (all fascinating). England and Englishness are central to Bodies - it's essentially a story of identity and culture. I don't think I'm giving too much away when I say that this not really a murder mystery at all, and the corpse, reappearing in the same location to different people at different times - people whose speech and thoughts carry occasional echoes of one another - has a symbolic significance to England. Si Spencer sadly passed away from heart failure in February 2021, just before his 60th birthday. At the time of his death, a close friend paid tribute and said: “He would’ve been 60 this August. He was one of the good ones. It was fun to be around him. He was a really intelligent, generous and compassionate man.
