I’ve read this book several times and it still has the power to keep me hooked even after all these years. Quite adventurous! And the story is based on so much factual information that it’s actually far more fun and entertaining than I expected. Damrosch’s curriculum is encyclopaedic but at the same time fondly personal. He includes his own snapshots of the pyramids in Egypt, the desert fortress at Masada, and some Mayan temples in the Mexico jungle. A chapter on colonialism is illustrated by a portrait of his parents, who early in their marriage ventured to the Philippines as Anglican missionaries; there, his father learned the language of the Igorot mountain dwellers, with whom he discussed theology, medicine and, of course, the weather. Inheriting this evangelism, Damrosch sees travel as a mental and moral challenge, not Phileas Fogg’s brisk experiment in abbreviating space and accelerating time. Phileas Fogg is an upstanding English gentleman who spends his days playing whist, a card game, with his friends at the Reform Club, and spends his nights alone in his large upscale townhome on Saville Row in London. Fogg has no wife and no children and mostly keeps to himself. An air of mystery surrounds Fogg wherever he goes because of his extreme reticence. He keeps his thoughts and his heart well hidden.But undoubtedly her most famous assignment was more light-hearted and entertaining – Nellie took on the challenge to beat Phileas Fogg by travelling around the world faster than Verne could imagine. The book is evergreen, enchanting, and has that magic to it that can never go stale. My favourite scene will always be when Fogg, Passepartout, and the Parsee elephant rider saves Aouda from death in the jungles of India. Another scene which I have always highly appreciated is the ending when Aouda expresses her love for Fogg and the discovery of Passepartout as he goes out to engage a priest for their wedding. The companions arrive at Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland, take the train to Dublin and then a ferry to Liverpool, still in time to reach London before the deadline. Once on English soil, Fix arrests Fogg.
