She reported that 30 babies survived until the liberation of the death camp on 27 January 1945, although other accounts suggest 60 babies were in the camp at liberation. Both cruelty and kindness are shown on both the side of the aggressors and their fellow detainees, as everyone fights to survive in the best way they can. I think Stuart has empathy for these events, but as someone who didn’t live through it, she was unable to really take me as a reader into the experience. However a raw addictive passion and the determined will to survive, overcomes the odds stacked against them, although not all are destined to be reunited with loved ones.

Stachurska has already written a best-selling book with the help of Leszkowicz entitled ‘The Midwife of Auschwitz’ from which a documentary was also made. It was difficult to read of the conditions babies were born into, that most did not survive and the ones that did were taken from their mothers. Others who survived were hidden, and some were tattooed with their mother’s identification number under their arm, so they’d be found after the war.

Reading these pages there was an emotional shallowness and detachment that was evident in the voice used by the narrator.
