The Governor of Britannia has decided now is the time to try and defeat once and for all the troublesome hill tribes of Wales and also the druids who are based on Mona, or Anglesey. He takes most of the available soldiers on the expedition including Cato, leaving most of the country to be protected by a few ill-trained forces, including Camuldonunum which is left to Macro and the few hundred other veterans who have also retired to the town. Despite Death to the Emperor being the first book I’ve read in the series, I never felt at a loss. The author provides sufficient detail about previous events to help make sense of things but not too much that you feel you’ve learned everything there is to know. Although this is my first introduction to Centurion Macro and Prefect Cato, I loved their partnership borne of mutual respect and a soldierly comradeship forged in the heat of battle. For much of the book, though, they find themselves apart, each wishing they had the other beside them for support and advice, and because of their complementary skills.

There is a desperation as the Roman Army have to crush all in their wake. Some underestimated and some not so much. The Eagle Series written by Simon Scarrow is based on the life of the two main protagonists, Lucius Cornelius Macro and Quintus Licinius Cato, often referred to as Macro and Cato. The two are depicted as Roman soldiers in the series. Macro is described as a veteran, who has the experience of 15 years of service in the Roman Army at the beginning of the series and later gets appointed as the Centurion. I particularly liked the way Germany and Britain are shown through the eyes of a Roman soldier. We have Cato's point of view, which is a literate, non-military trained perspective, as well as Macro, a military veteran. Looking at the Brits and the German through the perspectives of this unlikely pair really rounded out the experience.

Narcissus: Claudius's Chief Secretary and effectively Prime Minister of the whole Empire. He recruits Macro and Cato for "special" tasks around the Empire, promising them rich rewards for success, but making it clear that their lives are of little value to him or the Empire.

I will be sad when this series comes to an end and in this book we lose some great characters. But the good news for me is I have many unread books to get through in this series😉 This novel mirrors that approach, with the larger bulk of this following Macro and his adventures in Londinium and in the veterans colony of Camulodunum (which I've just found out is Colchester, and the first Roman Capital of the province) before the two principal characters finally reunite circa - again - three quarters of the way into the story. Like all in this series, there is a fair amount of action and derring-do and although Macro (and Cato) find themselves in unfamiliar circumstances, in most respects this is familiar territory - a dangerous situation, overwhelming odds, lots of action and a high body count. The main historical event described in the series is the second invasion of Britain in the Roman Empire and the resulting campaign undertaken by the Julio-Claudian dynasty to resist the Britishers from doing so. The series consists of a total of 13 books with the 14th one about to be published soon later in the year.
