Throughout the entirety of this book, I was thinking to myself "Yeah, this is a solid 4 stars" but that ending. This book is about two friends in high school in the 80's, one of whom gets possessed by a demon - the title pretty much sums up the rest. I wasn't a fan of this - I picked it up for spooky szn and I saw a lot of people on Booksta posting and raving about it. As a person who didn’t grow up in the 80s or America, some of the pop culture references pass me by, but the bits that do matter (The satanic panic, the class differences, the movies and songs that are important to the characters) are easy to follow along and understand.

The exorcist was driving some lumber up to Lakewood and stopped on I-95 to help a tourist change his tire. Best of all, I guarantee once you’re done reading you will look at the power of friendship in a whole new light. Adolescence is a complicated time, and some really bright people think that when the adult emerges, it’s like you’re being taken over by a different person.In a world where teenage girls are easily dismissed as annoying and petty it is very refreshing to finally have an author treat their teenage girl characters with respect, to speak about sexuality without making it horrid (except of course, when its not so savoury). the problem is, i’ve already read a perfectly-done example of this: A Head Full of Ghosts, which sustains its ambiguity throughout, essentially presenting two books at the same time; one in which the possession is real, one in which it is not. One night, out in a cabin by the lake, something happens to Gretchen that cannot be explained and she became someone Abby doesn't recognise. This is about what you would think: a snarky and fun pseudo spoof of an exorcist themed horror / black comedy. If The Exorcist had been authored by Tina Fey instead of William Peter Blatty, it might have borne an uncanny resemblance to what Grady Hendrix has accomplished with My Best Friend s Exorcism.

The inter-girl politics between Abby, Gretchen, and their friends was very well done and believable. I can’t read while listening to music with lyrics but either way, it helped set the tone for what that chapter was about and I enjoyed that immersion big time. A film adaptation directed by Damon Thomas from a screenplay by Jenna Lamia was released in 2022 on Prime Video. I listened to this as an Audiobook and although the screaming and volume kept going up and down depending on the situation, it was such a funny and quick book. From bonding over 10 year old trauma to teen mystery-2 superclose friends find themselves devolving as one is 'occupied' by new behaviors after a mysterious disappearance and the other tasked with saving her.

If you were born after 1985, you're probably going to miss out on reliving stuff like the scene where Abby and Gretchen get in trouble for singing the lyrics to Like a Virgin and wearing Gretchen's mom's cross necklaces. I'm not really sure why anyone would rate this book anything lower than five stars, unless of course, they didn't understand the premise of the book. Generally speaking, I'd say that this is the most accessible exorcism tale I've encountered for the non horror fans.I'd have preferred a different ending though with Halley's comet, if you've read it you'll know what I mean.
