Description

The General Wine Company sources wines from all over the world, but with a particular focus on small, independent producers. This is rather on the oxidative side of the spectrum, but we still find echoes of a coastal Fino profile underneath. A full bodied sherry with great balance this was previously known as Harveys Club Amontillado, but it has been repackaged and renamed. Amontillado is a rich amber colour, medium bodied and either dry or slightly sweet, depending on the style of the producer.

Now exposed to air, the pale Fino then oxidizes into a nutty, richer, amber coloured sherry as it is further aged in cask. While I’m not convinced she was an avid sherry drinker, Harveys is the only Spanish food brand to get a Royal Warrant from the late Queen. Very salty, which is amplified by a high acidity, with more citrus peels, hazelnuts and roasted almonds. To create Amontillado, a mature Fino is allowed to lose its flor, either by not replenishing or by a secondary fortification.

Founded in as far back as 1796 (making them over 200 years old) Harveys of Bristol have since been one of the UK's largest providers of Sherry to the UK. Harveys is a brand of Bodegas Fundador and while they’re mostly known for Harveys Bristol Cream, they also offer an interesting VORS range. There's an oxidative side from the long ageing, but overall it is quite a powerhouse, showing a piercing salinity and acidity. The wood elements are perfectly in balance with the flavours and bring a soft vanilla edge to the nutty flavours. We have tried many amontillado's - some much more expensive than Harveys but we keep coming back -its got the right degree of dryness but is so smooth.

It is easy to draw parallels to Gonzalez Byass’ VORS range, which also contains lightly sweetened Oloroso and Palo Cortado but an Amontillado that is totally dry.
