5. Using a Spray Varnish on Polymer Clay

Make-up – I’ve used powder eye shadow to colour clay and it works great, probably because it’s made of mica! Glaze polymer clay: Use liquid clay as a bonded glaze on your baked polymer clay projects. Use a brush, makeup sponge or fingertip to coat a baked polymer clay piece with liquid clay, then surface-set it with a heat gun for a few minutes. Bake it fully in the oven for 15-30 minutes following instructions. Note the slight cloudiness of all but the Kato Liquid. This effect can be reduced greatly by coating the surface with Varathane, as you can see in the photo below. Pour liquid clay into our collection of silicone molds and bake to create magnets, jewelry and more in a wide variety of styles: The stronger brands of polymer clay are durable enough that you cannot break them with your hands, even when used as thin as 1/16″ (1.5 mm). Of course to have this kind of durability the clay must be properly baked, which leads us to the next point. 2. Underbaking Polymer Clay Of course Kato Liquid does all the normal liquid polymer clay things, too, so it’s really quite a good bottle to have on hand. Kato Liquid Polyclay gives a glass-like shine after baking, especially when cured further with a heat gun. Sculpey Clear (Transparent) Use a thin plastic or metal tool to stir the formula thoroughly. Avoid adding air bubbles, and make sure you scrape the sides and bottom for an even mix. Like all other liquid clays, Fimo Liquid works nicely as a bakeable glue and to soften crumbly polymer clay. I like using Fimo Liquid as an all-purpose liquid clay, and it’s stellar as a colored glaze in faux ceramic effects, but it’s not my favorite for creating clearcoats. I know that some people have had very good flawless results with Fimo Liquid, but for me it forms lots of bubbles, plaques, and the surface can have a fine, pebbly grain at times. Kato Liquid PolyclayIt is so sad to work hard creating something that breaks when it’s worn or used. It’s even more horrifying to realize that you’ve sold something that is made from weak clay and won’t be durable. Not all polymer clay brands are created equal and each has its uses and purposes. For making things that are thin or have areas that are thinner than 1/4″ (6mm), make sure that you’re using a strong clay such as Premo, Fimo, Pardo, Kato, Cernit, or Souffle. Sculpey III, Original Sculpey, Super Sculpey, and Bake Shop are all quite brittle after baking and should not be used, unsupported, in any area thinner than 1/4″ (6mm). These weaker brands do have their uses, however, so save them for other projects. Here’s more about choosing the best brand of polymer clay for your project. Because waxes apply as a microscopically thin layerto polymer clay, they will do nothing to protect mica powder, glitter, paint, or metal leaf from wear or abrasion and can even remove them. You will not get a glossy shine with a wax. Instead, you’ll get a burnished sheen, but only when used on an already smooth surface.Wax applied to a textured surface will be white and unattractive. As you’ll only be using a little bit of liquid polymer clay at a time, it’s best to buy translucent liquid clay and colour it as you need it. Although pre-coloured liquid polymer clay is available, the colours are limited and it’ll work out more expensive than colouring your own if you’re only using a small amount. 2. Underbaking Polymer Clay

If you’d like your liquid clay to be thinner for your unique application, add a few drops of Sculpey ® Liquid Clay Thinner & Softener and stir in thoroughly. You only need to seal and protect what you put ON the surface of your polymer clay project. When you apply mica powders, chalks, glitter, or metal leaf to the surface of your polymer clay project, it will need to be protected if the item is subject to wear. Note thatlight dustings of chalk or mica, such as rosy cheeks on a sculpture, do not need to be sealed. The same holds true for dots of paint and antiquing in the recessed areas of a design.
