It tells you what kind of grammar it is, gives you a short elevator-pitch sized description of what that grammar point does, and then tries to give you the closest English translation. When I took a look at the intermediate book, I saw that romaji had been completely eliminated, so this reinforces my belief that it’s used in the first one simply because it’s the “basic” book out of the three. One of the smallest Japanese grammar books out there, this one covers parts of speech, sentence structure, punctuation, idioms, and even advice on pronunciation. Having gone through the book and listened to what others have to say, I will share what I feel are the best parts of the book and a couple things to keep in mind before getting it. I believe it's on the study lists for Japanese classes at BYU now, and is probably a top recommendation at the MTC as well.

This book, along with lots of practice, is what you need to master Japanese grammar, according to some glowing reviews and author Eriko Sato. on this list), it would make sense to continue your learning journey with A Dictionary of Intermediate Japanese Grammar. However, this book more than makes up for those occasional dictionaries through its extensive use of examples.That being said, if you do get the basic book and find that it lacks some grammar patterns that you’re trying to learn, there’s a good chance it’s located in one of the other two books.

The third and main portion of the text is devoted to descriptions and explanations of the basic grammar items. Today I’m going to share my A Dictionary Of Basic Japanese Grammar review, which is a book that was written back in the 80s by Seiichi Makino and Michio Tsutsui. Various uses of the particles are given along with numerous examples that are neither dumbed-down nor too difficult to grasp.There are in-depth explanations of all the grammar and plenty of example sentences and clarification points for each dictionary entry, plus additional information at the beginning and in the appendices. Highly recommended for teachers, learners, and takers of JLPT N4 or N5, this is a thorough, well-organized handbook that you’d be able to use for a long time. Anyway, for some of the entries you also get notes from the authors that might explain a nuance to the grammar, or talk about certain situations where there are exceptions.
