I mean, if I was Pioneer I would built this simple on/off option….if you know what I mean – it makes so much sense (you wouldn’t want the screen to sit there idle and just create unnecessary glare when using only mixer section and turntables in a darker room with ambient lighting everywhere would you?)

I’ve had the unit for about a week now and its great, but this weekend I tested out the ‘hot-swappability’ of the unit in terms of standard flash (no rekordbox analysis), rekordbox flash, laptop via ProLink, AND Traktor, and these are my thoughts which I wrote elsewhere but wanted to share them here as they may help some in making a decision. Nevertheless, the XDJ-RX is very, very good. Pioneer DJ is coming close to landing a killer punch outside the DJ booth, something pretty significant since the company is already the undisputed champion within it. The large screen is sure to catch the eye of a lot of people. And if history has shown me anything standalone Pioneer units fly off the shelves. It is expensive and there are some notable omissions. Some people may have wanted a bigger leap forward. But Pioneer’s formula of incremental improvements has worked for them. Plus this is still miles cheaper than a pro Pioneer setup.

All this is standard and what you’d expect from a Pioneer controller. But where it sets itself apart is the selection of FX available. More Beat FX and more Sound Color FX give you access to a staggering amount of options. I’ll cover the FX in more detail later but it’s worth noting how comfortable they are to use. This is by no means a large disadvantage as it doesn’t pose problems during normal usage of the device, it’s just something to keep in mind. Jog wheel differences I am particularly interested how xdi-rx compares in that respect (=sound quality) with Pioneer’s top mixer i.e. DJM900-nxs2 I prep pretty extensive playlists before gigs, so the cumbersome search function isn’t a deal-breaker for me, but hopefully they can update the firmware perhaps to allow for a USB keyboard input.

If the high price tag of the Pioneer XDJ RX3 is a non-starter, then the Mixstream Pro+ could be a good option for you. It has a great screen and offers standalone capability. Do we have any rumors if XDJ-RZ is coming out anytime soon? (with 4 channels, split cues and touch screen/s) ? Agreed that a four-channel version would probably do well too, but I also think a cut down version (no external inputs, simple mic channel, simple two-channel outs) would do awesomely well… if they could get a touchscreen in for searching. The mixer section of the XDJ-RX3 has also seen some notable improvements. If you are already familiar with Pioneer mixers you’ll feel right at home. And that does make the RX-3 extremely appealing. For experienced professionals, it’s essentially a 900NXS2 style mixer with plenty of bells and whistles. Likewise, it is great for anyone who has ambitions of playing in clubs where Pioneer gear dominates. Above the trim/gain knobs, you’ll find switches to set the channel to connected hardware. I’ll cover what you can connect in more detail in the connection options section below.

Overall, though, it’s a worthy improvement on its predecessor – just don’t expect it to act like a phone or tablet screen. Inputs and outputs Beat Loop – same as Auto Loop feature, different loop length access controls (1/16 beat to 8 beats by default)
