And the plot itself suffers a bit from bit too much messy scattering and a bit of a pacing inconsistencies. Villain Respect: Abigail tells Fatma she admires her after being buried alive together in rubble, after Abigail's been revealed to be the main villain. Fatma does not reciprocate.

Yup, there’s no way around it: if not for NG I would have DNF’ed this book without a second’s hesitation. It was jumbled, incoherent, predictable, and boring. There are many reasons why I judge this book so harshly. First is probably the case of expectations versus reality: I really liked the short stories set in this universe and expected the novel to be more of the same, or even better. It was not to be. Archibald could quite believe it. Dalton was obsessed with mummies—part of proving his theory that Egypt’s ancient rulers were truly flaxen-haired relatives to Anglo-Saxons, who held sway over the darker hordes of their realm. Archibald was as much a racialist as the next man, but even he found such claims rubbish and tommyrot. A djinn called Siwa makes his small home look like a palace using illusion. The illusion djinn in general create utterly realistic illusions, which even fool large groups simultaneously. Reputedly, the most powerful could create whole illusionary cities. Once I’d gotten through that story, I knew an entire novel set in this world was in the making. I just had to dream it up. I started thinking on ideas as early as that summer 2017. Jotted down notes, here and there. In late 2017, I sat down and sketched out the whole novel in a broad outline. The characters. The plot. The climax. All of it. Even the name– A Master of Djinn. Just had to write it, which primarily got done (once again) during the summer months. This also coincided with the arrival of my twin daughters–weeks early. The second half of summer and much of the Fall was spent between NICUs and learning how to be a new Dad–all of which was rewarding, beautiful, at times harrowing, and serious WORK. A Master of Djinn is a novel filled with so much charm; intriguing characters, a well-paced narrative, and fascinating world-building are all here. This is definitely a great debut, and I’m looking forward to reading the next installment in this series
