The story of Caffrey’s beer begins when Nicolas Caffrey, a wealthy silk and linen merchant, decided to set up his own brewery in central Dublin, around 1850. He wants to compete with the famous Guinness beer, which is sold en masse in every pub in the city and the rest of the country.

On Nicolas Caffrey’s death, the Dublin brewery was closed: as it had not been a success, his son, Thomas Caffrey, decided to sell the premises and set up another brewery in County Antrim, which he named the “Thomas Caffrey Brewing Co. Caffreys is an Irish ale that combines the smoothness of a stout, the refreshing of a lager, and the flavor of an ale. Caffreys comes in 440ml cans and has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 3.8%. Caffreys have 40 calories per 100 grams of fat. Caffreys For Sale Caffrey's Irish Ale was re-launched in 1994 and marketed as a beer which combined features from other types of beer: it could be served as cold as lager, its texture would be as smooth as stout, while its taste was that of an ale. Though launched with little advertising, it was priced at the top end of the market and was made available in over 7500 pubs. Sales of Caffrey's for the first year were higher than expected for a new product, at around 150 000 barrels in its first year. It was designed to appeal to "the ageing lager drinker...looking for a mature pint."
