From its pilot in 1968 to its curtain call in 2003, Columbo ran for 35 years and comprised 69 episodes. Selected items are only available for delivery via the Royal Mail 48® service and other items are available for delivery using this service for a charge.

As a graphic designer, I prepared a 3D map of Los Angeles to present this work (printed in large format) and I would be proud to offer it to you… While a Japanese Blu-ray boxset has been available for some years, its prohibitive pricing has placed it out of reach of most fans. I’m also not aware of any extensive extras on that particular set. More than merely releasing the series in glorious HD, the new boxsets will provide the sort of extras fans have been clamouring for since Columbo was first made available on DVD in the early 2000s. For the Blu-ray, each episode will feature audio commentary from experts of the day as well as archival excerpts from those involved in the production.My friend Steve and I just started a “Columbo” podcast of our own, “The Columbo Confab Podcast”. The ‘classic era’ of Columbo was given new transfers from the original camera negatives around 2011-12, the versions you see on television now in other words. They were scanned at 4K with final grading performed in HD… they look immaculate and will probably be the source of any new Blu-ray box set. There’s a clip somewhere of Falk on Carson, excited about the upcoming 1974 “Exercise in Fatality” episode and “new writer” Peter Fischer. I’ve seen it before, can’t find it today.

According to this thread at Blu-ray.com, there will be new Columbo Blu-ray box sets with special features including commentaries. If it isn’t any better then they wouldn’t be doing it. I imported the Japan Blu-ray box several years ago. The ’89-’03 movies are presented in 16×9. I really like some of those later episodes (and really don’t care for some of them) and would prefer having them in the original broadcast ratio. There are a few instances where relevant information is cropped off the bottom in the widescreen versions.

The new boxsets will provide the sort of extras fans have been clamouring for since Columbo was first made available on DVD in the early 2000s. This new release is sourced from brand new new 4K transfers of the original first generation negatives. The play was adapted to a made-for-TV movie in 1968, with Falk debuting in the role. In this made-for-TV movie, Columbo—rather than making the rumpled presentation that later became the character's trademark—is less shabbily dressed, wearing suits, shorter hair, and heavier stage makeup. He carries a raincoat, which would become a staple. He wears the raincoat in most of the scenes. He also appears somewhat more aggressive when confronting suspects.

Previously only a highly expensive Japanese import box set has been available on Blu-ray, which I actually owned for a bit.

I have to say I don’t think Jerry Parks knew Nora had murdered her husband. The most he knew was Nora had cheated the studio out of a few million dollars. Jean Davis knew and that is why she had to be killed. Nora was afraid Jean would tell Jerry because they had become close. Shera Danese plays a disgruntled wife who assists in a murder in "A Trace of Murder" (1997), in addition to appearing in five other episodes as a supporting character. The restoration has been done by Universal Pictures and they're being released by Kino Lorber. The US release date is 21st November 2023.
