If it’s cool, the Randy Sun Cold Weather Socks are a great value, and when it’s cold enough that you are questioning your sanity, the Gill Boot Socks are great, with another sock under it if there is room. Featuring glue and blind-stitch construction to prevent cold water flushing and help keep your feet warm, along with a comfortable seam layout designed to maximise comfort when sailing. PS testing revealed very low insulation value (see “ Sailing Socks,” PS January 2019) and this round of testing cemented our opinion. Not only was I going to ride the puddle, I planned on stopping and fully emerging my feet and shoes into it.

I wear thin polypro sock liners and Thorlo Hikers, which are wool and acrylic with some nylon reinforcement at the heel and toe. I've been having some bad cases of cold toes recently but I can never seem to get on with a pair of neoprene wetsocks; they always seem to have raised stitching in weird places and I blister easily. My feet were wet for 17 hours each day, but by keeping them dry and clean at night, I was at least able to avoid problems. give up on waterproof trail running shoes forever, use normal non-waterproof ones when it’s wet (and dry), get wet feet - be sad (and cold! However, a little trick taught to me years ago is that when you have a substantial break, give your feet, socks and boots a break as well. However that said I would usually just put up with wet feet because the neoprene would only be ok for a short time before getting too sweaty and the other options will get wet eventually. Perhaps hiking was just too much for them, but we abandoned them when they started leaking after just a few trips.You're warmer in a wetsuit while your skin remains dry, it's just that when water does get in the tight fit of the wetsuit limits the amount and prevents it from moving around too much. Unfortunately, I dislike pull-on boots and prefer the support and nimbleness I get from a lace-up deck shoe. and they are Brilliant my feet have never been more comfortable, then I tried them in my running shoes up in the Peak District and again Brilliant, knee deep bogs and water and my feet were comfortable all day long !
