The EE-1 externally mounted dot sight is perfect for super-telehoto photography - particularly useful with birds and wildlife.

I guess the best way to describe in one sentence the practical use of the dot sight with a Telephoto is the following comparison with a giant Telescope in observatories: it is impossible to locate the star you are looking for in the sky through the giant telescope directly: so they are all equipped with a smaller aiming scope giving you a target on a larger angle of view. For system cameras, it can also happen that the camera is focused to a short distance, so that the bokeh of your great telephoto lens is so beautifully even that you don’t even realize that you did have the bird in frame. Peripheral vision, and especially unobstructed vision of the area immediately surrounding the sight, should be unobstructed, because this is what makes a dot-sight superior to a camera viewfinder. Excellent – The equipment should be close to being ‘Like New’ but there may be some small cosmetic blemishes that lower its grade. If you set your sight up for say 20 metres, when the subject is much closer just mentally allow for it by aiming the red dot just above the subject.With the EE-1 you can take pictures while putting some distance between yourself and the camera and keeping an eye on what’s happening around your frame, something an EVF won’t allow you to do. Try the trick of keeping both eyes open and the free eye will give you heaps of peripheral vision when tracking. I first found out about this type of framing by virtue of the Kontur type of viewfinder marketed by Voigtlander in the 1950's for use on Rangefinder-style film bodies. Just after I had set this up a plane hoved into view and I used the dot sight to get a shot - not bad. Installing the battery requires pressing a tiny button with something like a ballpoint pen but otherwise is easy.

When fitted i aligned the dot by auto point-focusing the lens on a known subject and adjusting the red dot to suit via a small play in the hot shoe mount.I’d always been interested in trying it out and the chance came with the new 300mm Pro that we recently reviewed. I calibrated the lens and then painted a mark on the casing and a mark on the wheel at the calibrated point with 2x MC (both horiz and vertical wheels).
