Review: This book is absolutely sumptuous, now in its sixth edition, and nearly 20 years since the first edition was published, the sheer scale and size of this book is a testament to the enduring value of this beautiful collection. In the Introduction, a "Plant Selector" section lists ideal plants for particular growing conditions, such as coastal areas, shady spots, and different soil types The articles are well-written and very interesting, the layout is good and the book is very easy to use (other than the fact that you need to be a power lifter to actually carry the thing). The photography throughout is beautiful. If I were a gardener, this would be my constant companion.This being said, I couldn't resist reading this book after I bought for my green-thumbed wife as it is just so beautiful a tome. It's a big, chunky doorstep of a book, as you'd expect from an encyclopedia, and it's very well designed (I'm a qualified graphic designer, so I do know what I'm talking about on this front). Let me start by saying that I am not a gardener. In fact, due to my degenerative eye condition, I'm extremely photophobic and have to limit time spent in natural daylight, so gardening and I don't really mix well.
