All across the USA, people are showing up dead. The deaths don't appear to be connected in any way until one particular death occurs and gets the Secretary of Defense's attention. He arranges for a task force to investigate.DCI Logan is a main character I can spend a lot of time with (I like when fictional characters have a sense of humor, despite the difficult situation they are in), I prefer my detectives to be difficult, rough and loyal. With its first brilliant opening chapter, I was hooked! Although the story is about horrific crimes there is humour throughout . I loved this book with all its twists and turns and then the astonishing reveal at the end! Kirk says that he had made up his mind to become a writer at the age of nine. He had completed a class assignment on author Roald Dahl and realized for the first time that writing can also help people earn money. And as Kirk loved both money and writing, it seemed like he had found his perfect match. Subsequently, Kirk attempted to write and publish his first piece at the age of 11 when he submitted a letter in a Batman comic. Though he did not receive any money for his effort, it was enough for him to get his name printed as a writer and thereby cemented his ambition. And over the course of the next thirty years, Kirk successfully published more than a hundred novels under different pen names. He also wrote several animation scripts, comics, and also a few screenplays of feature-length films. I have seen J.D. Kirk mentioned constantly in the UK Crime Book Club group on Facebook so was really looking forward to reading the first in this series and getting a new favourite author to add to my list. This was definitely a strong start, and I have already added Book 2 to my wish list. So that should tell you something of my enjoyment. The protagonist is immediately likable and interesting, but at the same time a no-nonsense cop. The story developed at a good pace and the ending was not terribly predictable, although I did feel it was a little rushed. Like they went from clueless to A-ha! in 30 seconds and then everything just tumbled together in a hurry. I had high hopes for this series - Scottish crime story with a great narrator - but there is excruciating detail of animal torture and child cruelty in this first book. It's not often I get the opportunity to read a book before it's published that blows my mind, this one did this, hands down.

JD Kirk certainly hasn't gone for the genre stretching option, this is straight down the line Scottish detective fiction so anyone on the lookout for something new isn't going to find it here. With that direction in mind Kirk needed those good characters and to put them into good stories and that is precisely what he has done. Generally, I enjoyed this police procedural which was well-written, with a gripping plot and outcome. The "Scottishness" of DCI Logan and his fellow "polis", was entertaining and Logan's get up and go attitude was refreshing. The Scottish Highland setting. I love everything that has to do with Scotland and especially the Highlands. I find it incredibly atmospheric and when you know the rich history of the place it adds an extra feel of appreciation for me. The rest of the characters had no personality either. Same thing that happened with Logan, happened with the rest of the characters. If you want character development, you won't find it here. They were like those cardboard cutouts. Flat. There was NO sex, gratuitous or otherwise and this I greatly appreciate. It's rarely important to the plot anyway, So refreshing not to have the male detective trying to get with the female detective or vice versa. Instead, they focused on solving the actual crime. Amazing.Unfortunately the story had none of the sort of things that make a difference in a crime book. Looking for something thought provoking, underpinned with complex relationships? Or maybe a protagonist with an interesting history and character? An antagonist with a past that drives him to commit the crimes, even eliciting some understanding of the motivation? Well don’t bother looking because there are none of those things here.

The DCI Jack Logan Series - JD Kirk

This is a great way to spend your night with this story. It is a top notch story that gives a great sense of thrill. Trouble in the Dales. A brutal gang of poachers. When one of the unsavories is killed, can a DCI stop a river of revenge from overflowing with blood?a suspenseful and thrilling plot - even if I, personally, HATE when a cell doesn't have any reception when it is the most important thing in the whole F*** WORLD!!! (sometimes I think the cell phones were on purpose developed this way to have no signal when your life depends on it, just to have a reason for horror movies. I didn't find it to be any more gratuitously violent than any normal police drama on TV, (E.G. Bones. There is some SUPER gross stuff on Bones and this book doesn't even come close to that level) Murder generally produces a corpse. So you can pretty much bet on there being at least one dead body in a murder mystery. If that's a problem, maybe this isn't your genre.
