As for a review of the book, it was an incredibly easy read that can be devoured in one sitting and ends with a smile on the reader’s face. The related book is an adult contemporary romance. But other than that, Holder was everything I remembered from Hopeless. Sweet, thoughtful, funny, and intense. I’m actually kind of pissed that his awesomeness was tarnished by that cheating scene at the beginning of the book. It didn’t feel necessary to me at all; it just made me get off on the wrong foot with Holder.

Hoover’s decision to retell a story she’s already told was undoubtedly a risk, but it certainly was one worth taking. The character development in this story really shines as we meet Holder in a new light — his own light. As opposed to the heavy content and themes from the first two books, this lighthearted read features new and unexpected love, some steamy scenes, and lots of witty banter. We also get a fair amount of Holder and Sky in this story who we already know and love from the prequels. This book follows Sky, a sheltered former foster child who is entering public school for her senior year after being homeschooled her whole life, and Holder, the brooding bad boy who seems to have a secretive past.But I LOVE the emphasis on Les in Losing Hope. We learn so much about how Holder struggled with Les’s suicide. Sometimes, that extra element made Losing Hope feel like a completely different book from Hopeless (in a good way). It felt like its own story rather than the same story from a different point of view. Holder writes letters to Les in a journal after her death, and just the way he dealt with it was so interesting to read, but also saddening. So many of those letters (and Holder’s thoughts in general) broke my heart in half! Colleen completely jerked my tears around. Additionally, Hoover shows the reader a beautiful seesaw effect in this book: the parts where the reader was utterly bewildered by Holder’s actions in Hopeless are laid out on a platter and explained beautifully in this installment since Holder is narrating this piece. If Daniel is so happy with Six, why is he still having thoughts of his fling in the closet? Moreover, why are his feelings for Six starting to feel an awful lot like the feelings he had for his pretend lover? When she doesn’t respond, I sigh and look up at the ceiling. If she’s on the phone with him, I’ll be pissed. But if she’s on the phone with him, it probably means he’s telling her the break-up was all my fault and she’ll be the one who’s pissed.
