In a lot of ways, Mortarion is to Corax as Konrad is to Corax—a dark mirror lacking the optimism of the Raven Guard. However, my favorite part were perhaps the Digger/Sinis scenes and the way in which she perceived Morty.

While unnecessary, if you like the Death Guard and Morty, this is a fun addition to the roster, just don't expect anything to change because of it. In my opinion, the backstory and motivation for each of the traitor Primarchs are significantly more interesting than that of their loyalist brothers.An action packed romp into the early days of the great crusade, where Mortarion was juat trying to find his path and way. For all those who love to read great crusade era stories and especially those who love to read pre heresy traitor legion stories, this book is for you. They need to disable it in one day because millions of reinforcements are arriving from all the world in a day to save the center. Readers will almost certainly have come across Morty at some point in the past, but possibly not as we see him here in his pre-Heresy days as a newly-enlegioned Primarch looking to make his mark on the galaxy and impress his father and brothers. The prologue starts with the aftermath of the before mentioned short story in which Mortarion accepts surrender and tries a more peaceful approach to The Great Crusade at his second action in charge which is the planet Abysrtus.

The other two tell him that because of his methods and brutality the people dont know what to do with their freedom and his body counting decree made it so he just replaced another tyranny with another. Annandale doesn’t give the reader an understanding of what the arcology looks like or how the different zones of battle relate to one another. I did enjoy this book quite a lot and particularly liked diving deeper into the personality of Mortarion. By devoting space on the page to the philosophy and world view of the tyrants in power on Galaspar we get a better understanding of why Mortarion has to be so brutal in removing them from power, which builds understanding and sympathy towards the Primarch as he’s questioned by his brothers. Mortarion and the Death Guard do not take kindly to Galaspar’s nonsense, and they reap the scythe across the planet in a brutal, horrendous manner.The only thing I didn't enjoy was it pretty much 95% a battle and its rather chaotic and I get a bit lost in the big 40k battles sometimes and find it difficult to understand and picture what's going on but it wasn't too bad.
