Aside from this 55-inch model, the C1 is available in screen sizes ranging from the 48-inch (OLED48C16LA), 55-inch (OLED55C16LA), 65-inch (OLED65C16LA), 77-inch (OLED77C16LA) and a whopping 83-inch (OLED83C14LA). The stand design also remains the same with a long, slick, metal face which aims the audio out to the listening position from the downwards firing speakers. A Cinematic Movement option that controls the level of frame merging is particularly effective, and all but eliminates the horrid soap opera effect (if you’re a fan, Smooth is still available).

Standard is the go-to recommendation for most content, and works fine with studio broadcasts and sports coverage, but Vivid, often reviled because of its heavy saturation, is a real crowdpleaser too, particularly with superhero movies that use a denuded colour palette and animations designed to pop. Other than some minor differences that could be put down to sample variation, it’s the same excellent performance we’ve already seen from the larger OLED65GX and smaller OLED48CX. There is a very slight colour shift to cyan at the edges of the screen when viewed from a wide-angle but, when straight on with the TV, I didn’t see any obvious issues with tint. The panel itself is astonishingly thin (about 6mm) but, as is the norm for OLED TVs, there’s an enclosure on the rear that houses all of the set’s connections, speakers and processing hardware.In terms of features, both models have the same major features of HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision with IQ present and correct, but the remote control and WebOS smart TV system have been updated on the C1 along with the full line-up for Freeview Play. Measurements at the various window sizes up to 100% white field yielded a peak brightness of 707 nits on the 10% window and 124 nits on a full 100% window. Personally, I cannot get on with any interpolation and notice it being added straight away, but for many users this setting will work well for them and reduce instances of image judder.

Looking at the greyscale results you can see that we managed to obtain superb accuracy to reference levels for the greyscale and gamma. The only difference between the two is the finish: the 6LA is ‘Dark Silver’ and the 5LB is ‘Light Silver’. But because there’s no ‘Goldilocks’ setting as there often is on Sony TVs, you’ll need to experiment with the TruMotion options so see which works best for you. With SDR content, the C1 is exceptionally good in Filmmaker Mode out of the box and in calibrated modes.Using BFI will also affect your image brightness, so you should avoid using it with HDR10 content as you will lose around 100 nits of peak brightness. The LG C1 didn't disappoint at launch in any way –and even a year on it's a stellar OLED option to consider. Even bit starved content looked reasonable with shadows holding up well without excessive image artefacts.For this review, we manually calibrated the set, but we also tested that AutoCal works as intended, and it does. In fact, the WX and RX have slightly downgraded HDMI sockets when compared to the more affordable CX and GX. We expect perfect blacks and nuanced near black performance, but there’s a new found smoothness to the C1’s colour, an unerring sharpness to its images (and not just with native 4K, but upscaled Full HD too), that’s often breathtaking. This is why when you read online people refer to the TVs as only C1, because the other differences are not important.
