I know someone who keeps raving about Alan Bennett's writing, so I thought I'd investigate with this little story. I enjoy this type of writing and Mr. B. seems to do it quite well - commenting on something that happens in real life and giving you pause for thought and reflection. Of course, not everyone has some very eccentric woman park her broken-down van in their driveway for 20 years! When the stench was mentioned, especially the part about certain unmentionables drying on the electric ring, I thought I could never have done what he did! Miss S. never regarded herself as being at the bottom of the social heap. That place was occupied by ‘the desperate poor’ i.e those with no roof over their heads. She herself was ‘a cut above those in dire need’ and one of her responsibilities in society she saw as interceding for them and for those whose plight she thought Mrs Thatcher had overlooked. Could it be brought to her attention (and she wrote Mrs T. several letters on the subject) alleviation would surely follow.Therefore I beg you to have mercy on him indeed. June 1987 Miss S. had persuaded the Social Services to allocate her a wheelchair, though what she’d really set her heart on was the electric version.But rather than end this review on a sad note, I'd like to close with the fun first exchange between Bennett and Miss Shepherd. Bennett was standing by the convent in Camden Town and looking up at a crucifix on the wall. Her Reliant saw more action than the Mini and she would tootle off in it on a Sunday morning, park on Primrose Hill (‘The air is better’) and even got as far as Hounslow. More often than not, though, she was happy (and I think she was happy then) just to sit in the Reliant and rev the engine. However, since she generally chose to do this first thing on Sunday morning, it didn’t endear her to the neighbours. Besides, what she described as ‘a lifetime with motors’ had failed to teach her that revving a car does not charge the battery, so that when it regularly ran down I had to take it out and re-charge it, knowing full well this would just mean more revving. (‘No,’ she insisted, ‘I may be going to Cornwall next week, possibly.’) This re-charging of the battery wasn’t really the issue: I was just ashamed to be seen delving under the bonnet of such a joke car. I think this biography is readable and interesting since Alan Bennett wrote from his direct experience on a lady tramp who lived in her old van. The van itself parked in his land for 15 years was her home till she passed away. I like his ways of expressing himself considerately and kindly towards an elderly lady who wasn't his relative at all. I think it's his compassion, character and wisdom that shaped all of his motive and action in helping her live comfortably as much as she could. It's funny, I think, in the sense that they're both strangers but, Fortune might dictate their lives, they kept knowing each other and kept going in their own ways. It reminds me that everyone's getting older every day, month and year. Therefore, we need to do our best to our fellow human beings in any walk of life.
