A man, drawn naked and therefore appears to be vulnerable, washes up on the island and the people there are worried. However, they take him in, placing him in a goat pen and neglecting to feed them, yet still think they have done him a kindness. When they realise that they need to provide food for him they are outraged and decide to remove him from the island and punish the fisherman who convinced everyone else to help the man. They then build a wall around the island to prevent outsiders from ever finding them again. The Island peels away at all the good intentions of a family trip. Destination: Australia. Dr. Tom Baxter is scheduled to speak at an Orthopedics conference there. He's newly married to his second wife, Heather, a twenty-four year old massage therapist. Tom was a widower when she met him. Owen, twelve, and Olivia, fourteen, had been through so much after the death of their mother a year ago. They beg Tom to take them along. Heather is not so sure. Being a stepmother can paint you into a corner. Farnaby sees many other aspects of Palanese society as well, including a marionette version of Oedipus Rex called Oedipus in Pala with a revised and happy ending. The Palanese are so intimately connected with the reality of the moment that they even have taught the local myna birds to say "Attention" and " Karuṇā", to remind the people to stay focused on the here-and-now and to have compassion. The Palanese people are well aware that they will likely be invaded soon by Colonel Dipa's forces from Rendang, though they are resigned to pacifism. Farnaby too has been accepting the potential downfall of the island as a given, though he realises with discomfort that he may be an instrumental factor in causing such a downfall.

A really enjoyable read, albeit out of my usual genres. That said being a real Hellenophile and having a number of Cretan friends, I was always going to enjoy it. I do not know the area described in the book at all well, my friends live nearer Rethymno, but I have flown in over Spinalonga many times and was aware of its history.

Lifestyle

I don't want to give anything away, so I am keeping this review vague. It's best to jump into this book blind. A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy. After having a terrible accident on a private island in Australia, four members of a family have to unite their forces to save their lives. If you enjoy fast-paced novels and plots centered on survival in the nature, you will love this one! After being alone for a long time, one starts to listen differently, to perceive the organic and the unexpected all around, to brush against all the incomprehensible beauty of the material.

Ένα βιβλίο που κράτησε στο παρασκήνιο τη νόσο και παρουσίασε μία υπέροχη ιστορία μίας οικογένειας που χτυπήθηκε από πολλά βάσανα, αλλά πάντα άντεχε, πενθούσε σιωπηλά και ήλπιζε για το καλύτερο. Χαρακτήρες καλογραμμένοι, δυνατά συναισθήματα, ακριβείς ιστορικές αναφορές για το νησί της Σπιναλόγκας, και άριστη παρουσίαση των παραδόσεων και των εθίμων της Κρήτης.

True storms that won’t abate at sundown, that can cut the island off for ten days, that transform the beaches and rattle the cottage.

When Tom Baxter, a doctor, announces that he needs to travel to Australia for a work event, his new wife Heather suggests the whole family go as a way to bond and spend some quality time together. I didn't like Heather's character much in the beginning, but she really comes into her own as the book progresses, as do her two spoiled stepchildren, Olivia and Owen. The least said about Tom, their father, the better. Anyway, none of this matters. As much as it gave me cheap thrills to hate read it, I know I will forget it soon enough. You might as well forget it exists as well. pg 128-129) "What if someone sees us?" Owen asked. "In that case, don't wait for us, just run and keep running," Heather said. "Try to hide somewhere until you see a police car."The story starts with a mysterious man killing people in a boat. Of course, the killing continues – “the bodies keep piling” as the blurbs of pulp fiction thrillers like to proclaim. I will also say, the plot itself worked out a bit different than I was anticipating going into the book. In doing so, Benchley gave a vivid look into the inner workings of their little timeless pirate community. As a fan of Benchley's others works, Jaws being an obvious one, I was pleased that he pulled off non-monster from the deep story the way he did.
