It was necessary to sail before March 15th, Lana attempted to understand why so much seemingly important information wasn't shared openly among the crew. After the expedition began, the yacht was constantly monitored, crewmembers participating in a 24 hour rotating watch. After a week at sea, the crew had been drinking (spiked drinks) late into the night. The crew discovered a missing member the next day, no one knew what happened to him or why. I like to set my novels in a place—or places—that excite and inspire me. I must be able to really see and feel a place before I’m able to imagine my characters there. I also love exploring the shift in characters when they are removed from an environment they know intimately and displaced somewhere foreign. I enjoy seeing how they react, whether they flourish or flounder in that new space—and ultimately, how the experience changes them. Lagoon swims and boozy nights turn sinister in [this] atmospheric thriller” ( People ) about a group of friends whose dream journey around the world on a yacht turns into a chilling nightmare when one of them disappears at sea. This was a perfect read for the summer with all the descriptions of tropical paradises and life on the yacht. It was so idyllic that I completely understand why the crew were so desperate to keep their amazing lifestyle. I would love have been on The Blue too! The dual timelines were really effective at drawing me into the mysteries and let me become quite attached to some of the crew. Knowing that something awful was coming just ratcheted up the tension as I feared for my favorite characters. Right until the very end it wasn't clear what had happened and who would survive. I finished this book and my first thought was to immediately pass it on to my best friend. You know a book is good when you need to share it right away! I'm going to hunt down all Lucy Clarke's previous novels. BAFTA Scotland award winner Abigail Lawrie (Tin Star) and Rhianne Barreto (The Outlaws) are Lana and Kitty respectively. Jay Ryan (It Chapter Two) joins the cast as Captain of The Blue, Aaron Winbourne, whilst Sean Keenan (The Power of the Dog) is Aaron’s younger, charming brother Denny. You only got brief interactions with the other crew members and generally not in a positive way. It made it hard to care about what happened to them. Forget about solving all these crimes; the signal triumph here is (spoiler) the heroine’s survival.

I've found a new favorite author and as soon as I finished this one, I bought one of her other books, Swimming at Night. I hope it's just as good! The Blue was a beautifully addictive novel, the tale of a friendship put to the test and a tense psychological thriller with some really great characters. Vivid imagery, increasing tension, and smooth prose immerse the reader in the rhythm of the ocean and the isolation of life at sea. Fans of psychological suspense will be taken in by Clarke’s fast-paced and engrossing read.”

It's an adventure/drama set on a boat in and around the Philippines. There is a mystery that slowly unfolds, but, that's It. No real suspense, or chills and thrills. If that sounds like your kind of story - then I highly recommend It. I've read one of Lucy Clarke's books before -Castaways- which was pretty good. I found this one to be much better, with some great writing that -at times- made me feel like I was on the boat myself.This is Clarke at her finest: thrilling plot, perfectly rendered scenery, and characters as real as your best friend—or your worst enemy. A spellbinding exploration of human nature, the bonds of family, and the beautiful mysteries of friendship and love, The Blue is a book worth staying up all night for.” Think about the state of Lana’s and Kitty’s lives and their friendship together that attracts them to joining The Blue. Why do they both feel the need to escape their everyday lives? Do you think there’s truth to the saying that “A change is as good as a rest”? The story was very slow to reveal itself and although the ending was good I'm not sure it was worth the effort. Lana is the only crew member who thinks it’s wrong not to mention Joseph’s disappearance to the authorities. Describe what you might do in this situation, and if you can see reason in the rest of the crew’s ultimate decision.
