The MDF plinth feels rigid and sits on four isolating feet, but they are not height adjustable, which is a pity. It means the turntable needs a level surface. From the frame, the MDF solid construction is used for mass damping and reduced distortion. A high torque engine offers a stable and consistent speed for solid, dynamic sound. Authentic belt-drive turntable I think what puts me off the ProJect and Rega is this entirely manual operation and having to dismantle the thing to change RPM. That said, from the youtube videos I've watched, those brands do appear to be "better". I mean, I have no real desire to see a belt outside of the table but on the other hand, I would say my main deal is that I would rather not have a tone arm so weighty that is carves a new groove in my vinyl - especially as a lot of it is old and let's just say has probably had some of that life on older cheaper tables. A small d.c. servo controlled motor drives the platter rim by belt, putting the drive mechanism on display. The thing I am missing is a phono stage. I am pretty much thinking the ProJect MM box simply as I'm going into a Denon DM41 which I'm sure most will sniff at. At the end of the day, my living room isn't huge and I figure when I move next year to somewhere bigger, the Denon will be a decent bedroom mini hifi. So I figure given I've spent a fair wodge on a tt I won't need to replace anytime soon, I can scrimp a little on the phono stage until I move and spend cash on a bigger living room system. Although speed accuracy was poor, speed stability was very good. There was almost no basic speed wander and this resulted in a low Wow value of 0.1% (DIN) and Flutter of 0.06% – both very good results for a budget belt drive. The total W&F value, DIN weighted, was 0.08% – very good. Measured to the Japanese JIS Standard this was 0.05% (for comparison with Japanese turntables). Our speed stability analysis shows the usual variation peak at 33rpm (0.55Hz) – basic rotational frequency – but it is low. There is little in the way of flutter peaks at right.The main features of both designs are actually similar, but there are also many changes, even surprising ones. This turntable sounds coherent and energetic. “Coherent”… can be written about any turntable, but energetically – certainly only about some of them. Fortunately, not only the most expensive ones, as you can see, also happen in this price range.

Ok, there are plenty of better TT out there but these two are within my budget. As you see I have a somewhat tight budget right now. Added to this are silver elements – conical legs, tonearm, and cover … On many turntables, TEAC uses two switches with a round rosette and distinctive truncated spindles; There is only one in the TEAC TN-3B and this is enough to turn the revs on and off and select the revs ( 33.3 and 45 rpm ). The plinth is made of an MDF board, with an additional layer of “honeycomb” added to the bottom. Metal construction, low-resistance bearings and adjustable weight and anti-skating make this a proper audiophile-grade design. A trial run with Ortofon 2M Red on the TEAC TN-4D reveals, as expected, a far more pronounced analytical rendering. A little more detail than on the Oyster, but at the same time you lose this silky rendition that Sumiko Oyster generously serves. But again, it is dependent on preferences and the rest of the setup what is the right Choice for you.
