As bleak as Laura's days are, she is gentle enough to protect a sea turtle that might otherwise serve as food, and hopeful enough to dream of rowing in the island gig despite repeated declarations that a girl will never be allowed to handle one of the oars. The pages of this expansive anthology from War Horse author Michael Morpurgo and his wife, Clare, are crowded with memoir, sketches, and countryside poetry.As if that wasn't enough, a devastating storm blows off roofs, kills the only working cows, and washes up turtles. I was especially struck by Laura and Granny May's kindness and compassion in saving the dying turtle when they had been hungry for days and the turtle could have made a filling meal. As bleak as Laura's days are, she is gentle enough to protect a sea turtle which might otherwise serve as food, and hopeful enough to dream of rowing in the island gig despite repeated declarations that a girl will never be allowed to handle one of the oars. There's a lot to think about, for younger readers, and a lot of putting oneself in the central character's place - imagining a kind of desolation it's hard to conjure up in an increasingly globalised world.

It has some obvious events in the pages, but I won't go into all of them, other wise there's no point in reading it, if I'm just going to paraphrase the whole book in my review, but I just found it such a lovely little book.

The turtle was injured and she tries desperately to push it back into the sea but the turtle was too heavy. The book has some other interesting parts relating to Laura - the great aunt of Micheal who has recently passed away and in her will, has left him a diary. They have three farms in Devon, Wales and Gloucestershire, open to inner city school children who come to stay and work with the animals. The child in the story has a bond with a turtle around half-way through the book and I couldn't help wondering whether this was the beginning of Morpurgo's slight obsession of child-animal partnerships.

A distinguished British pair brings on the violins for this sentimental story built atop the Holocaust. I loved the way in which Michael Morpurgo wrote the story, reading Laura's diary entries I felt that it was more personal and carried a lot more emotion. Written as a diary entry - I like the idea of doing up the classroom like a set from the book and using maps to find out where the Scilly Isles are and what they look like. I would recommend this book to someone who wants to try something new and go with an adventure novel just like I did. I didn't enjoy this book as much as some of his others (Kensuke's Kingdom, Billy the Kid), but it was a nice young person's fiction to whiz through in-between some larger reads.The diary entries tells the story of this time for Laura and the events that led to Laura saving the day not just for her family but for everyone that lived on the the island of Bryher. A poignant, but also slightly underwhelming Victorian tale of how a remote group of islanders (in the South West of England) were saved by the wreck of the Zanzibar, as recounted after the funeral of an island family's matriarch. She tells of her life on storm-battered Bryher Island, among Britain's Scilly Isles, where her family's survival depends on the mercy of the elements and, especially, the sea. However, the author keeps the characters very real and as a reader, I felt very involved in their lives. Though it is a short little story, I find it an immense pleasure to read even now, I am all grown up. No girl on any of the Scilly Isles has been an oarsman on a gig and no daughter of his is going to be the first.
