It is true that those who have read a number of twisty mysteries will likely guess the truth, but I think there's enough goodness here to make it enjoyable anyway. Or it was for me at least.

I figured that Theo had seen the gun while stalking them. After threatening Alicia with the knife and tying her up, Theo probably went and found it. Alternatively, perhaps Theo saw Alicia go hide it while he was stalking them. Alicia Berenson is such a mysterious, intriguing character and I was trying to figure her out the entire novel. I kept asking myself, " What is up with Alicia?"She is a famous, talented painter and happily married to her husband, Gabriel. They live in London and have a cozy life. She loves having sex with her husband and painting. That’s about it. We are told that she was ‘charming’...but how can she have gained this reputation since she has 0 friends and her only real relationship is the one she has with Gabriel (her partner or whatever). Jean-Felix is the owner of a gallery but they don’t spend time together or are on friendly terms. Who is she charming to? She is a complete recluse! She lives in London and is good enough painter and yet...she has managed to make 0 connections. Her diary entries make her sound at best guileless and at worst like a demented child. Her character is just an object. She is there to look beautiful and tragic. She has a few basic reactions (she just “ looks up” or “ looks down”) or she does the good ol’ ‘banshee’ act, flinging herself in a sudden ‘rage’ towards Theo or another patient. Wow. Such a deep and complex portrait of a betrayed and traumatised woman.Three stars from me means I believe the author has achieved all they set out to, but that I personally didn’t fall in love with the book. A beautifully written story where the characters came alive for me. Several of them surprised and fooled me more than once!! The story is told from Rachel's point of view. The pace is slow. I didn't like any of the characters and I didn't trust any of them either. It's quite a dark read but it's neither tense or thrilling. This story has a dual timeline with a few twists. The dialogues/monologues came across as being incredibly silly and they make the characters sound like children.The second timeline is what happens afterwards. Theo gets the job as Alicia therapist because he genuinely feels bad about what happened with her. However, Theo eventually figures out that Alicia does, in fact, recognize him as the masked man. He ends up killing her to protect himself, but not before she writes the truth in her diary. The book ends with the police coming to question him about the diary. So, I’m not sure this is fully explained in the book (someone feel free to correct me if I’m wrong). Based upon the blurb I was expecting a thriller and instead got more of a mystery/domestic drama. It was also a slow burn which is definitely not my favorite. The character Rachel annoyed me and the choices she made at times were hard to believe. The writing style was ok, again not my favorite. Maybe this would have been better as an audiobook. She tied her husband to a chair and shot him multiple times. Then she slit her wrists and waited for the police to arrive. It is an incredibly well written and unpredictable psychological thriller and really hard to put down as it is so exciting, and love the mix of betrayal, obsession and nervousness and 'its worth the wait for the fantastic twisty ending.

They start a passionate affair, which blinds her to everything else happening around her and which will have devastating consequences, that no one could have ever predicted.

You want to know, right? Well, I did and couldn't stop reading until I found out. It is the feeling you have when you just have to know why!! Rachel Goodchild is a middle age doctor who doesn’t feel appreciated in her marriage to teacher Nathan. Her relationship with her adult daughter Lizzie also isn’t the way she would like it. Her new patient Luc Lefevre left a lasting impression on her. As the book progresses the reader can see there is something brewing between the two.
