Du Beke’s understanding of the prevailing economic and political backdrop brings much to the story and the growing threats of war and its devastating implications imbue the story with a spirit of ceasing the moment in a perilous world. After a successful debut the temptation might have been to maintain the status quo but instead Du Beke takes the risk of significant developments taking place in the lives of the primary cast and as a result the novel proves to be as engrossing as the first.

I loved Billy's letters the most and hearing about the ship going to American which me think about my great gran who had watched the titanic set sale in 1912 with her dad on that famous day, wow.

I’m very impressed by his literary skills and I’m delighted to hear there will be more to come from him in this truly delightful and sassy series, suitable for all ages. With a spate of thefts from the rooms of guests it signals the arrival of a hotel detective and female principal dancer, Hélène Marchmont, finds herself increasingly torn between dancing and her secret daughter, only to be romanced by a wealthy Irish guest who has set his sights on her. The deco decoration at the start of each chapter sets the scene for the ball room and grand hotel where all the action occurs.

I enjoyed it because I already knew the characters, but someone coming into this novel 'cold' would get very little idea of what the main players looked like or their backstories/personalities. I was absolutely thrilled to be offered the chance to review Anton du Beke's new novel Moonlight Over Mayfair. There are a few slips of fact beyond the central story, but they in no way affect the attractions of this very enjoyable novel.The book opens with a glimpse of a fire bursting out into the Grand Ballroom, and fast action being taken by Raymond. And with another instalment in the pipeline I can only recommend readers follow this one from the start! Set in the build up to war, I think the microcosm of the Buckingham hotel is a little too pronounced and more could have been done to establish a sense of the historical setting of this novel.
