The metering modes offered by the camera include Evaluative, Centre-weighted and Partial, which uses 10% of the frame area - the 1100D doesn't have a spot metering option. In use, we found that the Evaluative metering mode provided fairly good exposures with a variety of subjects, thanks to the advanced 63-zone metering sensor. When shooting contrasty scenes, it is worth using the Evaluative mode in conjunction with the Auto Lighting Optimiser feature, accessible by hitting the Q button and using the interactive status panel. With all the key exposure controls available through this menu, this is a key button and well placed within thumb’s reach There's a host of scene modes including Flash Off, Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Night Portrait and, oddly enough for an interchangeable-lens camera, a close-up mode as well. The majority of these scene modes allow users who do not want to fiddle with shutter speeds, f-stops, white balance or ISO settings to let the camera know what type of photo they are about to take, which helps the EOS 1100D / T3 to optimise these settings for that particular subject. We struggled to see the point of the close-up mode though, as the quality of one's close-up shots depends more on the use of the right kinds of accessory - such as a macro lens and possibly a ring flash - than any camera setting. The new Feature Guide in the EOS 1100D’s menu system usefully provides a brief description of each setting and its effect. Sitting alongside the Rebel XS (1000D), it's clear that T3 (1100D) is very slightly larger but only by a fraction. The new model eschews the 1000D's textured plastic, instead being constructed of smooth, rather low-density materials. The 12 megapixel images were a little soft straight out of the camera at the default sharpening setting and ideally require some further sharpening in an application like Adobe Photoshop, or you can change the in-camera setting. The built-in flash worked well indoors, with no red-eye and good overall exposure. The night photograph was very good, with the maximum shutter speed of 30 seconds and Bulb mode allowing you to capture enough light in all situations.

Those considering replacing their 1000D with this updated model should note that their current batteries will not work with the 1100D. It has a new battery type, which Canon claims will give 700 exposures on a full charge.ISO sensitivity can be set between ISO 100 and ISO 6400 in full-stop increments. Here are some 100% crops which show the noise levels for each ISO setting, with JPEG on the left and the RAW equivalent on the right. The RAW files were developed with Canon's Digital Photo Professional (3.10.0.0), using the software's default settings and noise reduction set to 0. The 1100D's control layout is actually very similar to the 600D, with a few changes that for the most part make more sense for the beginner target audience. Virtually all of the important controls are located together at the right-hand side of the rear of the camera, rather than more liberally scattered around the body, which allows for a more straight-forward transition from compact to DSLR. Taking advantage of the extra room allowed by the smaller, fixed LCD screen, the buttons are also larger than on the 600D, again another subtle and effective concession to the 1100D's market. All of the buttons are clearly labelled but, being flush to the body, can be a little hard to press at times. We did miss the 600D's top-mounted ISO control, though, which has been rather inexplicably replaced by the release button for the pop-up flash.

The pop-up flash has a guide number of 9.2m @ ISO 100. For greater flash control and output, the 1100D is compatible with all Canon EF flashguns, which are connected via the hotshoe. This is also seen in the low light performance of the camera. Dimly lit subjects can be captured with minimum image noise and without resorting to the flash by changing ISO, bulb and shutter speed settings. The settings within the camera can be used to optimize the lighting levels around the subject in focus. As well as the standard selection of Program, Aperture-priority, Shutter-priority and Manual shooting modes, the 1100D as has Fully Automatic, Forced Flash Off and five individual Scene modes: Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, Sports and Night Portrait. These regular shooting modes are complimented by two further shooting modes unique to Canon DSLR’s: Auto depth-of-field, and Creative Auto.

We tested the EOS 1100D with the original EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens, which offers a fairly standard focal range for a kit lens and crucially includes image stabilisation. This is important for Canon, as competitors like Sony, Olympus and Pentax all offer image stabilisation in their DSLRs. The difference between Canon (and Nikon) and the others is that Sony, Olympus and Pentax have opted for stabilisation via the camera body, rather than the lens, which therefore works with their entire range of lenses. Canon's system is obviously limited by which lenses you choose, but it does offer the slight advantage of showing the stabilising effect through the viewfinder. Canon and Nikon also claim that a lens-based anti-shake system is inherently better too, but the jury's out on that one. A shooting mode dial on the top accesses the usual exposure modes as well as a handful of standard scene modes, such as portrait, landscape and sports. These modes automatically set the exposure to achieve the best results, as does creative auto and the A-DEP option for automatic depth of field. Video shooting can also be found on the dial. This is the best DSLR for a beginner to learn photography. I have been using this for the last four months and i'm quiet satisfied with its performance. I have absolutely no complains about this camera and will recommend it to anyone buying his first DSLR. This camera has all the features to develop and bring out the photographer inside you if you have the will to learn this art. The 1110D can record images as lossless 14-bit Raw files (in Canon’s .CR2 format) or as compressed JPEG files, or indeed both simultaneously. JPEGs further benefit from a choice of Fine or Regular quality, with the sensor able to output a maximum 4272 x 2848 pixels at the full 12MP resolution. This can, of course, be lowered to suit your requirements with options to record JPEG images at 6.3MP, 3.4MP, 2.5MP and 0.3MP, again with a choice of Fine or Standard quality. At the top sensitivity setting of ISO 6400 the image is noticeably affected by noise, even when viewed at less than 100% Straight out of the box, the EOS 1100D has a distinctly entry-level feel. It is lightweight and made from what feels like a tough but low-density plastic, to keep costs down. Canon has done away with the textured handgrip of the EOS 1000D, and given the 1100D a shiny and smooth plastic finish all over. It remains a compact DSLR at 130x78x100mm and is just about the same size as its direct competition, although a shade larger than its predecessor. At 495g, it is a little heavier than the 1000D, too, but slightly lighter than other similar DSLRs on the market. Resolution charts: These images show 72ppi (100% on a computer screen) sections of images of a resolution chart, captured using a Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. We show the section of the resolution chart where the camera starts to fail to reproduce the lines separately. The higher the number visible in these images, the better the camera’s detail resolution is at the specified sensitivity setting. Dynamic range The Canon EOS 1100D is a fantastic DSLR camera for beginners. The wide range for ISO Rating, Shutter Speed & Focal Length settings is great. So, this is a very good camera to start with if you are interested in good photography. You can learn professional photography & build up your interest on photography with this camera and then after a few years you can upgrade to a higher-end model if you feel like.Sadly, the Feature Guide doesn’t extend into the main menu options, so there’s no hand-holding when it comes to things like explaining what the ‘Peripheral Illumination Correction’ feature does, or what the Auto Lighting Optimiser is. If you want to understand what these features do then you’ll have to read the manual. The Canon EOS 1100D has a great feature of recording videos in HD at 720 p resolution at 25 and 30 frames per second. The Canon EOS 1100D lets you experiment with several lenses as it is compatible with all EF and EF-S lenses. The focal length range of the 1100D SLR is 18 - 55 mm, while the aperture ranges from f/3.5 - 5.5. The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens handled chromatic aberrations well during the review. The examples shown here at 100% represent the absolute worst results you can expect from this lens mated to the EOS 1100D / T3. Low light performance also impresses, with the 1100D able to deliver perfectly usable results right up to its maximum sensitivity setting of ISO 6400, so long as you’re not pixel peeping that is. The camera does an especially good job in the mid ranges too, with ISO 400 to ISO 1600 delivering very good image quality that remains perfectly usable even when viewed at 100%. VerdictI used the camera across various types of lighting. The auto white balance does a good job in overcast light and in sunny conditions, producing almost neutral results. The custom setting is even closer to neutral, while the white balance presets give warmer results. I found the auto white balance offers a pleasing compromise.
