The NR1510 comes with the most basic set of extra features from all the Marantz receivers we have tested so far. Obviously this was to be expected as the unit sits at the bottom of Marantz’s lineup so a few more advanced features are missing but without their absence affecting the overall performance of the unit when it comes to its online and streaming capabilities. As such there are features like Bi-amp, HDMI upscaling and IMAX Enhanced that are mostly kept for the big boys without these being the kind of features that you would be missing if you are thinking of getting the NR1510. and 4K/120Hz Passthrough on Marantz Slimline NR1711: 1 out of 6 inputs passes up to 8K 50/60Hz and 4K 100/120Hz 4:4:4 and the rest of the inputs pass up to 4K 50/60Hz 4:4:4 video signal. In addition to Dolby Atmos and DTS: X decoding, the NR1711 also offers Atmos Height Virtualization and DTS:X Virtual processing, both of which attempt to create a 3D listening experience, without recourse to physical height or surround speakers. Both work pretty well, provided your expectations are managed. What you basically get is a fuller, fatter sound. Ease of use is a major facet of the NR1710, in fact. The step-by-step setup process is brilliant, and the (online) user manual clear but detailed. Take time to rename your sources, hide ones not used from the front display, and create up to four Smart Select modes (which automatically switch to a source, volume level and sound mode), and the UX is even better. DTS Virtual:X: Marantz Slimline NR1711 supports DTS Virtual:X which bridges the gap between DTS:X codec and the reality of so many consumers' homes, allowing you to enjoy multi-dimensional sound regardless of room size, layout, or speaker configuration. If you have a limited speaker setup you will miss a full immersive potential of your entertainment system. DTS Virtual:X adds height and surround audio effect to your system without adding height speakers. It works with multiple configurations and delivers immersive sound experience out of 5.1 or even 2.1 speaker layouts.Another feature that seams to becoming standard across the board, at least for all Marantz AV receivers, is support for High Resolution Audio with the NR1510 featuring the exact same support as the rest of the models. This means that not only the unit supports the usual low quality MP3, WMA and AAC formats but also high quality FLAC, ALAC and WAV files up to 192 kHz/24-bit of quality. There is also DSD streaming support for both 2.8 and 5.6MHz. The NR1711 is an easy receiver to appreciate. It’s characteristically warm, rather than clinically sharp, and really comes into its own with multi-channel and immersive sound mixes.

The Marantz NR1510 may not have huge power as other receivers at only 50 watts per channel, but it’s enough for smaller living spaces. The spec of Marantz’s NR range may have evolved over years, but the design has largely remained static. The amp has a familiar curved fascia, with two dials either side of a large and clear display. The question is how much and if it will be enough for your speakers. No matter how you see it you will be very close on the low end and these speakers certainly deserve something better.
