Ultra wide angle shooting provides certain challenges from a photographer’s perspective, largely compounded by optical limitations. Keep in mind though, if you will, this type of distortion, especially in this immediate case above, lends itself to actual physical depth in the scene. I didn’t find any relevant traces of chromatic aberration, apart from at the shortest focusing distances when using the fastest aperture.

But wideangle lenses are infamously more difficult to design, and this shows up when we examine images from the 7-14mm. Software can allow you to cheat a bit in compensating for this type of distortion, which can be very handy situationally, but this type of optical distortion is very difficult to avoid when your camera is not leveled. That said though, with little effort you really can create a distorted and stretched image if that is your intention.

You get an all-metal build on the surface except for the non-removable hood which is made of plastic.

This is mostly useful when shooting a movie clip with C-AF enabled, but the feature can also be used when photographing action. The zoom ring also goes from minimum to maximum in about a quarter of a turn, with markings at 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, and 14mm. Additional features include a manual focus clutch that lets you quickly switch from AF to MF and an L-Fn button on the base of the lens that you can make quick setting adjustments. It’s really best-suited for the largest bodies in the MFT World, which right now means the OMD EM1 or Lumix GH4, although boosting the grip on the EM5 II certainly helps. For me, I came from Canon full frame land and supplemented that with m4/3 for a small, light travel system which I do love it for.

It’s an unscientific test because I don’t shoot scientific pictures and I want to see how this lens may do for something simple like interiors (which is one of the reasons I bought this lens).
