When Davis began performing and recording again in 1981, he did so in front of sold-out crowds but refused to perform his early work, like "The Birth of Cool." That’s not the case with records, however. Vinyl records value is determined by a number of factors, including condition, scarcity, the name of the artist, and a host of other things, both obvious and obscure. Elvis Presley's life has been turned into a movie several times since his death, most notably when a young Kurt Russell played Presley in the made-for-TV movie "Elvis" in 1978. The Beatles have remained relevant in popular culture despite having last played in public together in 1969, when they performed on the rooftop of Apple Corps headquarter in London. Presley died of a massive drug overdose at his home in Memphis, Tennessee, on either Aug. 6 or Aug. 7, 1977. He was just 42 years old. This factor is pretty straightforward when it comes to vinyl records value; records that sold well and are quite common are going to be less valuable than records that sold poorly or are hard to find. A lot of albums sold in the 1970s and early 1980s sold millions of copies when new, and as such, it isn’t difficult to find copies in nice, playable condition. The story of Queen was a hot property in Hollywood for the better part of a decade, with "Borat" star Sacha Baron Cohen first attached to play Freddie Mercury in the film version in 2010, although Cohen later dropped out of the project. Whenever there’s a commodity that is worth money to people, there are unscrupulous people who try to take advantage of them by forging that commodity. Paintings have been forged, currency has been counterfeited, and unfortunately, so have many rare records. So…what did Olivia Newton-John make from Grease? Newton-John’s exact salary for Grease hasn’t been confirmed, but based on her successful music career at the time, it’s expected that she was paid a decent amount to star in the movie. In an interview with Vanity Fair in 2016, Newton-John revealed that she almost passed on the role as Sandy because she didn’t know how Grease would affect her music career at the time. “I was very anxious about making another film, because my music career was going well,” Newton-John said at the time. “And I did not want to mess it up by doing another movie that wasn’t good.” Director Randal Kleiser also told Vanity Fair at the time that he wasn’t sure Newton-John could play Sandy because of the good-girl persona she had from her music career and albums like 1975’s Have You Never Been Mellow. “I remember meeting her for the first time at that party and thinking, Well. ‘Have You Never Been Mellow?’ How is that going to work? How is she going to become this slut?” Kleiser told Vanity Fair. One factor that can significantly affect a vinyl record’s value is the availability of reissues. In the 1950s through the mid-1970s, record companies kept close tabs on whether an album was selling well or poorly. Poor selling albums were usually removed from the catalog and existing copies were sold at a discount. Starting in the 1980s, record companies took a different approach, and reduced the prices of slow-selling records, keeping them in print but offering them for sale at a lower price point.
