The fast-paced-story is hilarious as Junior makes wonderful observations at the strange things that the humans around him do and Butler has included a plethora of pooch puns and doggie jokes. I love a book about animals but Junior is a unique character more like a human with how the tone of his characters voice comes through the book. And when the vacation takes a VERY unexpected turn, I'll need to find a way to escape a LIVING NIGHTMARE and get us all home! Focusing on a different breed for each book, starting with a Golden Retriever and a German Shepherd, these stories are based on true dog stories or on true-to-life situations.

He's also an actor, dancer and trained aerialist as well as a keen observer of trolls and their disgusting habits. I found this book light on spine/story, but I enjoyed the humor and illustrations (c'mon, why doesn't Richard Watson, illustrator, have his name on the cover? It is amazing that the author of this story was able to get into the mind of a dog and make readers see through their eyes. This cute little pup shows her what unconditional love looks like, and Dana does her best to look after her new pal, too. Susan reveals all, along with details about Elizabeth’s work as a lorry driver during World War II—where she learned to take apart an engine and put it back together!

Junior has silly-sounding names for many things in his world -- but they make perfect sense from a dog's point of view. It even uses dog friendly language such as the "food room" and "moving people boxes on wheels" which adds to the feel of the story being told by a dog.

I suffered through the audiobook (I didn't see the illustrations til afterwards - so maybe I would have liked it better with those?

This is also a great series for young readers to use as a springboard into series like Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Liz Pichon's Tom Gates and Patterson's Middle School.

Amid the craziness, and trying to dodge and/or placate random authority figures, there are strong messages of friendship, loyalty, and trying to learn from your mistakes. With some extra time to kill last Saturday afternoon, I read Dog Diaries: A Middle School Story, which is probably the worst entry in the Middle School franchise! But what is it they say about trying to teach an old dog new tricks…I’m not exactly sure of Junior’s age but I do know that he knows a lot of tricks, none of which have been taught at obedience classes. And whether sitting at Dickens’s feet while the author acted out his stories before writing them down, or entertaining Dickens’s vast litter of ten children before a blazing Yule log, Tiny Tim tells a tale as lively as a holiday jig!
