This Emma Premium Microfibre Pillow is soft - but that’s not to say it also doesn’t suit side sleepers, who are traditionally better suited to firmer pillows. With so much height, I found wherever I lay, I still felt the support of the double layered cushioning inside, and importantly my head stayed aligned with my body. The second major selling point is its clever adjustability. Known by aficionados as the pillow's loft (front sleepers often like a low loft, while side sleepers prefer a taller position) the Simba Hybrid can be tailored to your exact spec. In this way, it's suitable for everyone, no matter how you sleep. On that note, it might be prudent for me to mention that I think some pillowcases may be too small to house this pillow. Most of mine fit fine, but I have one or two that struggle to completely envelop it. Individually, the Simba Renew layers are incredibly soft, while the Aerocoil layer is much firmer, but with the airy coils and cotton covers, the pillow is breathable and doesn’t stifle – ideal if you sleep hot.

Cotton: The basic pillow. Cotton-filled pillows are cheap and readily available – but they’re prone to absorbing heat and over time they flatten out to nothingness. Fine for occasional use in the spare room; not good enough to be considered in our search for the best pillows out there. As long as you're a firm fan of firm pillows and you're willing to part with a hefty bit of cash, this could be the answer to your sleep problems. Simba offers a one-year guarantee on its pillows but they should last way longer than that. Just how long will depend on factors such as whether or not you sleep on them every night, how often you wash the covers and how often you fluff up the Nanocubes. The pillow does arrive in a bigger box than you might expect, but as we said in our Simba Hybrid Pillow review, it is a big beast, so there's not much to be done about that. First impressions Carrying a travel pillow might seem like more hassle than it’s worth, but you should really consider the impact it could have if you don’t get to sleep on an overnight flight. Taking a travel pillow could mean the difference between having two days of groggy jet lag and feeling spritely on arrival.

The pillow casing contains two pillows inside, one of which is slightly firmer, and one slightly softer, meaning you can flip the cushion based on your preference. Alternatively you can remove a pillow to adjust the firmness and height. In short, it’s completely adaptable to just about any sleeping type - other than perhaps those who really do favour a really firm pillow.

Then, of course, there's budget. You might be tight on cash, and looking for the best pillow for a low price, or you may be flush with funds, and seeking the absolute best pillow, money no object. Front sleepers, also called stomach sleepers, best suit a medium-firm or firm pillow with a low loft to ensure the spine is kept in alignment. Memory foam or hybrid pillows can provide that kind of support. A lot of pillows describe themselves as cloud-like but this one justifies it better than most, being extremely light and really quite lofty – more of a cumulus than a stratus. If most pillows are too flat for you, this could be the one you’re looking for. It offers a lot of support, not through being solid but for the sheer amount of light, springy filling. It’s hard not to wax lyrical about this pillow, which is the plumpest and most comfortable down I’ve ever slept on. It’s made from 90 per cent ethically sourced Hungarian goose down and 10 per cent feathers (scan the QR code on your pillow for a fully traceable guide to the manufacturer). From a pure comfort point of view, the Simba Hybrid Pillow is as close to a feather pillow as I think you can get with a synthetic fill. The Nanocubes gave a level of softness, and I gently sank into my pillow. It’s a far more comfortable and natural feeling, to me, than a harder memory foam pillow.

Sumptuously soft as they are, down-filled pillows can present a problem for allergy sufferers. Scoom created this pillow with that in mind.
