J Day printer credits inside gatefold (written in white colour near the feet on the right of the band members, on the "pop up"). Their mix of hard rock; folk melodies; blues licks; surreal, impossibly dense lyrics; and overall profundity defied easy analysis, but that didn’t dissuade fans from giving them 11 gold and five platinum albums. At a time when many of the established stars are faltering, it is a particular pleasure to hear an important new voice. However, if you do not have the box in hand already, you will have to spend hundreds of dollars to obtain one on the secondary market.

Jethro Tull's second album, Stand Up, marked an early turning point for the band with the addition of guitarist Martin Barre along with Ian Anderson's introduction of folk-rock influences to the group's blues-based sound. The newspaper includes many news articles packed full of continuing jokes, a crossword, connect-the-dots and much more. On Side Two, the only obvious difference between the 2 orange bullseye pink label pressings is that the word "Produced" is slightly further away from the spindle hole on this pressing than on Jethro Tull - Stand Up.The turn from the blue-orientated approach displeased important Tull radio and promoter connections. And yet, despite the sharp contrast between these influences, the album always never comes across as disorganized or disjointed-a fine achievement. In June 2015 he published a novel, My Life And The Beautiful Music(Cape), based on his time in LA in the late 80s reporting on the heavy metal scene. Roots To Branches is to a degree anomalous, mixing standard motifs of Barre’s fluent, head-tossing riffs and Anderson’s percussive flute-playing with some Eastern influences drawn from a trip the singer made to India.

Anderson’s waspish wit was at work throughout Thick As A Brick a satire of concept albums presented as – what else – a concept album of ludicrous convolution. He praised the musicianship of the players and remarked the first examples of "the first-rate lyricist Anderson would quickly become. Some songs on the album exhibit unusual instrumentation, such as "Fat Man," played on a mandolin, and "Jeffery Goes to Leicester Square," played on a balalaika. S. Bach that soon became a staple of the band’s live show and is still constantly performed to this day.

Enjoy too the rollicking Hunting Girl, in which Anderson, back in dirty old squire mode, encounters a lusty lass of the fields. The third record in a loose trilogy begun by Songs From The Wood and Heavy Horses, Anderson turned his attention from the distant past ( Songs…) and the rapidly receding one ( Heavy Horses) to a threatening near-future: North Sea Oil and Dark Ages took on the environmental and economic consequences of the modern age. In a recent interview, Anderson picked Stand Up as his favorite Jethro Tull album, “because that was my first album of first really original music. It was released again in November 2016 in a box set with two CDs and one DVD, named Stand Up - The Elevated Edition. During the recording of This Was, frontman Ian Anderson began writing new material which differed from the straight blues/jazz fusion style which the band were known for at the time.

The majority of the album was recorded live with the entire band, with minimal overdubs, however primarily acoustic songs such as "Look Into the Sun" and "Fat Man" were recorded mostly solo by Anderson. Nights of winter turn me cold, fears of dying, getting old, we ran the race and the race was won, by running slowly. Simply put, “Stand Up” was the genesis of Tull’s sound and, not surprisingly, is one of Anderson’s favorite Tull records. Vinyl of both records is pristine and flat and has no sound issues , and it also comes in a beautiful laminated gatefold cover .

If a fan of this and you like records done proper at 45RPM, this version is beyond highly recommended! The followup to The Zealot Gene (2022), this is the shortest gap between Jethro Tull studio albums since 1980. Led by Ian Anderson, Tull still continue to tour throughout the world, entertaining audiences of all ages. All of the songs were recorded at Studio 2 of Morgan Studios, except for "Bourée" which was recorded at Olympic Studios because Morgan was already booked for the day (although takes of the song were also recorded at Morgan). Now with their 45 RPM release, plated at QRP and pressed at RTI, the best-sounding version of this historic album gives listeners an even richer sonic experience. I bought this lp around 1968 when I was in high school I had a Mickey Mouse stereo but it sounded great on it.
