Released in 2006, the Arctic Monkeys' debut album was fairly typical of the 'good' (in my opinion) music that was in the charts at the time. A lot of my friends and I used to go out having blared this through our hi-fi's at uni when it came out and it always set us up for a good night out. If you're the type who likes physical copies and have heard this album on Spotify then why not grab a copy? All of those bands have great albums and are some of my current favorites, but they aren't really traditional "rock" albums per se. turned out to be one of the all time classic AC/DC records, both with original howler Bon Scott and his Geordie successor.

The only thing I have against this album is that I don't think of it as quintessential vinyl material- there isn't a great deal of difference in the vinyl and the digital versions. The first album from Sheffield-based rockers, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not was the fastest selling debut album in UK chart history. Don't compare it to the best bands of all time, compare it to the current crop of what's out there - these guys absolutely blow away Hard-Fi, the Rakes, the Editors, Maximo Park, We Are Scientists, Kaiser Chiefs, etc etc.

You can hear The Kinks, you can sense The Smiths and a love of the 60s but most of all you can hear The Arctic Monkeys. So, it’s little surprise that the Gallaghers’ laddism celebrating nights out fueled by lager and loud guitars is the bedrock foundation of the Arctic Monkeys.I understand the Oasis one a little better, as they are a more recent band, and Whatever People Say I am, Thats What I am Not has a similar quality to the first two Oasis albums, in that its hard to believe a band can burst onto the scene already sounding this polished and this distinct, and drop an album that is so solid front to back.
