This boxed set provides you with all the units you need to get started, or to reinforce an existing army of Aeldari or Ynnari. The contents of this set have been specifically chosen to provide you with an ideal Aeldari force for Combat Patrol-sized games – approximately 25 Power Level's worth of models, which can be built in a variety of ways – and will also save you money compared to buying the contents individually. Simon: Strands of Fate enables the Aeldari to generate anything up to 12 Fate dice at the start of the game, which they can expend to predetermine the results of key dice rolls throughout the battle. They can generate more during the game by holding objectives with their Guardian Defenders, but with access to so many Fate dice right from the outset, you can front-load your damage output in the early stages of the battle and gain a massive advantage for doing so. Vanguard Detachment *Interestingly, Blood Angels players recommend the Dark Angels Combat Patrol box for their own force. Shroud Runners are a new unit. They are basically Pathfinders on Jetbikes. I’m honestly a little hesitant to include them for our theme… but a unit of 3 isn’t too much of a break from theme. And it scratches that “new unit” vibe. For only 105 points a unit isn’t going to break the point bank.

The Aeldari are an ancient and once-proud race whose hubris caused their demise. As their civilisation reached new heights of technology and culture, and they came to dominate the galaxy around them, they began to seek stranger and darker pleasures.There are many elite units which excel at one battlefield role, rewarding an observant commander who can be flexible on the fly. Harlequins must be used with even more precision – they’re faster and deadlier yet as they caper across the warzone, but their only real armour is surprise. Then there’s the Crusade section, which is a cool way to grow and develop your army as you play games, as units earn experience and gain new skills and armaments. Tell epic stories of conflict and triumph as you blood a force of fresh troops and mould them into hardened veterans armed with legendary relics of war. For new players or players looking to start an entire Aeldari army this box is a Repeat for sure. Mainly if you want to run a Saim-Hann list, but also just because you’ll get a fantastic core to a collection. You’ll find use for just about everything in the box. The only “issue” is that after 12 jetbikes, you’re kind of leaning hard into playing Saim-Hann. While different Aeldari armies might choose to focus on specific aspects of the combat arts, they have a host of iconic units at their disposal. These are likely to be some of your mainstays. Brave, honest and true, they only very occasionally indulge in macabre vampiric rituals with goblets of suspiciously viscous red ‘wine’– and it really is only once in a blue moon that one of them slips into an insane, suicidal killing frenzy fuelled by the overwhelming psychic grief imprinted in his DNA.

There’s plenty of guidance on how to paint your chosen subfaction, as well as fascinating lore on their histories, victories, and defeats. Each Combat Patrol is supposed to be balanced against all the others. That might be hard to believe when looking at the contents of the Adeptus Custodes box set, as the boys in gold are notoriously hard! I’d consider having some fun and getting some more of the specialist units like Fire Dragons, Swooping Hawks or Dire Avengers. But really, you need to probably lean into the speed of this list. Perhaps drop the Wraithlord and think about more bikes or things like Swooping Hawks etc.

Also, GW mentioned the Thousand Sons and the Grey Knights boxes will hit shelves in March 2022, so look for those very soon! Even Aeldari engines of war are swift and agile, including tanks like the Fire Prism , which uses an intricate crystalline matrix to focus energy into either destructive pinpoint spears of light that can pierce the most formidable armour or deadly blasts that can obliterate hordes of armoured infantry. Harlequins Aeldari warriors emulate the various warlike aspects of Khaela Mensha Khaine in battle, but each Craftworld holds a terrible secret in its heart. There is a chamber which contains an Avatar of Khaine, a molten metal statue which contains a still-living shard of the defeated warrior god. In times of war, this shard is awakened and set aflame. This colossus of battle bestrides the battlefield, a living god that scythes down its foes by the score. Wraithlord On top of that, you’ll get all you need to run more diverse armies than ever before, with combined hosts of Asuryani, Ynnari, and Harlequins. The Aeldari have always been a multifaceted race, but now they’re bringing their full strength to bear and you can demonstrate that on the tabletop like never before.

Personally, if I was starting a new army, I’d get two and stop there. For a Combat Patrol it’s a pretty strong box — it’s got a bunch of more “generic” options that can really fit into any army. Alternatively you can buy a couple and go hard into the Windrider builds. It has been pointed out by veteran Space Wolf players however, that this boxed set may not be the best place to start your collection. Instead, they suggest the Blood Angels Combat Patrol box*. But that’s not our challenge, so today we’re going to start with the Space Wolves Combat Patrol box.

The Aeldari once ruled the galaxy, before their civilisation collapsed beneath the weight of its own hedonism. Now the Asuryani sail the stars aboard massive vessels called craftworlds, their citizens keeping to highly disciplined Paths to avoid drowning in the same decadent madness as their ancestors. Each craftworld's Guardians take up arms to defend their dying race, wielding deadly shuriken catapults or power blades, or shredding foes atop their swift Windrider jetbikes. Guided by the wisdom of their Farseers, supported by the advanced firepower of their sleek Wraithlord constructs, the Aeldari fight to survive in a galaxy where extinction seems inevitable. How does the Aeldari Army Play? The Aeldari are essentially a precision force, known for their psychic capabilities, incredible speed, and agility. While they may seem fragile – akin to a ‘glass cannon’, they boast potent tank units like Wraith Constructs. The true strength of this army lies in its characters and their psychic might, combined with the speed and hit-and-run tactics of units like Windriders and Warp Spiders.

They operate as an ‘elite’ army in Warhammer 40k, meaning they tend to field fewer miniatures than their opponents for the same budget of points, but each model can hope to deal out more punishment to the enemy before it gets blown away. The result? Tense, involved, but straightforward games that can be played in less than an hour.* There’s still plenty of nuance for Warhammer 40,000 experts to enjoy – swapping out Enhancements and Secondary Objectives to mix up their playstyle, and mastering each faction’s Combat Patrol in turn, without having to build up a full Incursion or Strike Force-sized army.
