I’m always here to answer questions, but it may also help to take a look at a video like the following, just to give you some added context to what’s in the rulebook: As a stand-alone expansion, Wingspan Asia offered an opportunity for us to revisit the Automa rulebooks and incorporate some of the disparate rules that were added within each expansion, into a comprehensive whole. Though polished, the rules remain the same. When taking a bonus from the duet map, do you take the food from the birdfeeder? What about the card?

The other question I have is about the height of the built-in cardboard separators for the card section on the right. Currently they’re 80mm tall, but that can make it a little difficult to extract big chunks of cards from them (the cards are 87mm tall). I’m going to reduce them to 70mm tall for the next prototype. I own the base game and plan on buying European today so I wanted to have everything cleared out before we introduce anything new. Or was the intent to use the world map as well? Although, this can bleed over based on the migration patterns of the birds. Wingspan Asia (everything but the box–thanks for making an eco-friendly choice! If you want the box art on your wall, buying this print directly and solely supports illustrators Natalia and Ana)

The Asia expansion components can fit tightly into the original box…if you don’t have any other expansions. We’re creating a Nesting Box solution to hold all official Wingspan components, and the Nesting Box easily fits the components found in Wingspan Asia (player mats and the duet map on the top layer, followed by cards and tiles in the middle layer, and duet tokens in the bottom layer).

Most of the birds found in the core game are predominantly found in North America. However, each expansion will feature a different region: We’re hoping to explore Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, and Australia/NZ. We found that the balance for the Duet goals was crucial to keep the competition fun. Automa scores the Duet end-of-round goals as you do and when she was too strong, players started ignoring the Duet map; too weak and the interesting, puzzly decisions lost their magic. For the design, we settled on an approach where sometimes she bases her choice on the Duet end-of-round goal and other times she places at random. Automa is still fierce on the Duet map but if you play well, those goal points are yours. top layer (removable cardboard tray): holds 5 neoprene mats (laid flat), 10 player mats, rulebooks, goal mat Despite being at least moderately complex (both mechanically and strategically), Wingspan has achieved mass appeal — potentially because of the beautiful artwork that pervades throughout, or maybe it’s the suspiciously edible looking miniature eggs? This success is what spawned the first two expansions, which in main simply added more birds from their respective locations, plus new objectives with them. Wingspan: Oceania did bring in a wild food resource, but aside from that, they felt quite familiar.

When will the next Wingspan board game expansion be released? (Physical and Digital)

For ‘when played’ cards (such as the ‘Bobolink’) when the action is for laying eggs, do we include the just played card (in this case the ‘Bobolink’)? This box is designed for all past, present, and future, though future expansions haven’t been designed yet, and we’ve included plenty of modular space for the future (and for third-party accessories). We can’t 100% guarantee that everything we ever make for Wingspan will fit inside, but we genuinely don’t foresee any future expansions not fitting in this box. The first printing of the Nesting Box includes Wingspan Asia (except the Wingspan Asia box, which isn’t necessary because it’s stored in the Nesting Box. This is an eco-friendly measure we’ve taken to avoid waste and excess). If you really, really want the Wingspan Asia box, we don’t have empty boxes for sale, so you’ll can simply buy Wingspan Asia and wait for a future printing of the Nesting Box that doesn’t have the expansion inside. These containers are being phased out of the game and replaced with pulp cardboard trays (for eco-friendliness).

When a bird says that I can “repeat” another bird’s ability in the same habitat, how does that work? Wingspan actually has quite a bit of interaction: The dice you choose from the dice tower (and when you choose to reroll them), the bird cards you choose (if you take a face up card, you’re taking it away from your opponents), the end-of-round goals (when playing on the green side of the goal mat), and quite a few bird cards that result in other players gaining food, drawing cards, etc. Wow, genuinely blown away! Your attention to detail is exceptional – Genuinely thought the sugar cane trays were an oversight in the photos as they weren’t listed on components list or the rulebook – but you are all over it! I think they are fantastic addition to Asia and a very in keeping with the stripped down more portable, more compact standalone that has been crafted. How does Wingspan Asia fit into the Nesting Box? The mats, duet map, and rulebook go on the top layer. The action tokens and goal tiles go in their respective slots in the setup tray, and the eggs and Duet tokens fit well into any of the three trays used during the game. The cards go in any of the three areas designated for cards (the upright section of the middle layer, the bird card insert in the middle layer, or any bird card inserts you keep in the bottom layer).Now I live an work in China, and there are some interesting birds here, but there doesn’t seem to be as much of a variety of birds as in North America. I also don’t have a wide circle of friends who enjoy board gaming as much as I do, so I really appreciate the Automa. I only beat the Automa twice, but it is a good challenge and I never get bored trying to find ways to outwit the Automa. It literally feels like I am playing an AI player. Quite frankly, Duet Mode is “Wingspan +” for the 1v1 experience, and I appreciate its creation. It does not deserve the bits of criticism I’ve seen floating around in the community. Elizabeth Hargrave discovered a good way to make two-player Wingspan better. It is the definitive 1v1 experience, and I hope everyone gives it a fair shake. I will be interested to see how the tournament community takes to this new game mode and if it becomes the preferred way to play 1v1 competitive games. I suspect that it will. Here’s what the middle section looks like with a lid on the bottom tray; the lid is designed to hold scorepads. It needs a little work to fit better, though. When a bird power allows you to look through the discarded bonus cards and choose one (like the Wrybill’s), can you look through all the discarded bonus cards or only the ones from your group? Wingspan Asia adds plenty of new bird powers that involve the other player at the table. All those extra interactive birds along with the fact that Wingspan Asia is designed as a stand-alone expansion meant it was time to implement a benefit system permanently. However, we still didn’t want to require players to use Automa’s Hoard. Automa’s Cache, a streamlined version of Automa’s Hoard, is now an official part of the Wingspan Automa rulebook. It works by simply giving her 2 tokens when she receives something from an action you take, but 1 token if it costs her anything to receive it. As with Automa’s Hoard, these tokens are converted to victory points at the end of the game.

Examples: strix occidentalis, pipilo maculatus, podilymbus podiceps, strix varia and it could go on. Wingspan Asia introduces more opportunities for birds to cache [wild] foods. Does that mean I can cache nectar? Does the nectar get cached on the bird or placed in the “spent nectar” spot of the player board? I don’t mind when something sells out, but what irks me to no end is that I got notification that the nesting box was on sale and it was then sold out in under 8 hours! Yes! The game has been printed in many different languages, including but not limited to, these publishers: Feuerland (German), Matagot (French), Maldito (Spanish), 999 Games (Dutch), and Delta Vision (Hungarian). Playing Duet Mode with Oceania included. There are a few rules from each expansion that seem to almost contradict each other.What I think you’re asking for–and what most people seem to mean when they ask for “more player interaction”–is more *direct conflict*. That simply isn’t what Wingspan is about; it is, after all, a game about managing a bird sanctuary. :) So, the Hooded Merganser looks for birds you’ve already played in its habitat–you’re looking only at other birds with the predator icon on your player mat (not in your hand or elsewhere). Ah, I see. When I mention dates like that, it’s a worst-case date–I wasn’t saying that the Nesting Box is going to be a December 2022 release. I’ve added a much more in-depth explanation to the previous comment: In a ‘between turns’ power card (like the ‘Turkey Vulture’) if the birdfeeder is empty, do we rotate again or skip the power? I personally don’t play with the Automa that often, and when I do, it’s through the digital adaption of the game by Monster Couch. If I do get some play time with Wingspan Asia’s Automa, I will update this review accordingly. Why Wasn’t Wingspan Asia Just More Cards?
