Wonderfully real characters--this is a book that isn't afraid to have its characters be messy, sometimes self-centred, with real and thus often difficult, misplaced, and highly unflattering emotions.

Also, a small nitpicky thing that doesn’t really matter, but why do the chapters have to be soooo long?I know I’ve discussed the queerness of queer romance in various other reviews and let me just make very clear yet again that I am not trying to position myself as any sort of gatekeeper of queerness. The part where we explore Delilah’s childhood, including her relationship with her family, was what I was genuinely interested in. When she's not writing or reading, she's wrangling her two young sons, falling into Pinterest holes, drinking coffee, taking walks, or trying to figure out which Orphan Black clone she likes best. I’ll be skipping the rest of this series, which is a shame since I was hoping this would be a winner. This book follows Delilah and Claire, two characters who had always distanced themselves from each other in their childhood, bonding while attending Delilah's step-sister, Astrid's wedding.

She'd say that and a lot worse if you're about to cancel on her only daughter's wedding on such short notice. Also, although I understand that there is going to be backstory to Claire's divorce and co-parenting, the drama with Josh was just so irritating. There’s family drama, trauma, childhood memories, love, romance, diverse relationships between not just the main couple, but everyone in the book, that’ll have you on the edge of your seat. Delilah Green is iconic and I love her, but honestly I wasn’t feeling a huge spark between her and Claire in this story.

Everything you could want in a sapphic romance - snark, steam and sweetness - with an intricate exploration of what it means to love someone and how we choose to show it, all spearheaded by its unforgettable protagonist Delilah who you'll simultaneously want to be and be with forever. Astrid thinks that Delilah is a b*tch and she has a troubled life, when in fact she herself is quite spoiled and Delilah has spent her life alone. And let’s not forget the snappy banter and seriously scorching chemistry; you’ll need a very cold shower after this read! Something I loved about their relationship is the way it allowed Delilah to be a far better step-parent than her stepmother was to her.

She was one catastrophe away from having to move to New Jersey, and if she ever wanted to break into the ruthless New York City art world, New Jersey wasn't going to cut it. She twisted the lid off a half-full bottle of gin that sat next to the sink and took a shot, no glass required. It’s very kind to its characters, allowing them plenty of scope to be as complicated and as damaged as they need to be, while simultaneously letting them shine in their relationships with each other, their deep needs to love and be loved. They'd only spoken on the phone a dozen or so times since Delilah left Bright Falls the day after high school graduation, hopping a bus to Seattle with her Bright Falls High duffel bag on her shoulder, while Astrid took off for a postgrad trip to France with all of her horrible BFFs.

I love a small town romance but I so rarely find good sapphic small town romances, so you can imagine my delight when I picked up Delilah Green Doesn't Care and had so much fun. Delilah Green swore she would never go back to Bright Falls – nothing is there for her except memories of a lonely childhood. I adored Claire and Delilah's connection, there was such passion and intensity between them but there was also so much tenderness and I loved how vulnerable they were with one another.Clearly this lacks insight to see how damaging that actually is to their child and Claire and was instead used as a convenient tension plot point.
