Everyone will be able to take something away from this novel, whether it's a greater understanding about mental health, a comfort that you re not alone, or even just the knowledge that if someone looks OK on the outside, it doesn t always mean they re OK on the inside. Holly started her writing career as a news journalist, where she was nominated for Best Print Journalist of the Year. I would have preferred some good girl positivity—because god forbid the girls noticed that Jane was struggling and stood around her, supporting her instead of mocking her in front of people.It starts from birth, with women being given their father’s last name (which they are, traditionally, expected to retire in favour of the husband’s name upon marriage). So this book is pretty different from the mental health contemporaries I had read previously because it's split evenly between a story about romance/boy troubles and Evie's OCD. Seeing how her friends, family and therapist support her through this difficult time gives not only Evie hope and strength, but also the reader, by making them feel less alone. I heard such good things about it from the Twitterverse and couldn't wait to get stuck in (I'd already bought the companion sequel, How Hard Can Love Be? Despite the seriousness of the topic, the book is easily accessible through the use of a chatty writing style and brief chapters.

It was refreshing to read about girls discussing periods and women’s mental health for a change as feminist issues. In my opinion, the golden rule that every author should follow while writing is to never ever make the main characters mock a clinical condition of other characters. A word that perfectly encompasses this book is 'thought-provoking' - by challenging stigma and addressing topics that are sometimes avoided and brushed under the carpet, it really makes you think. It broke my heart, made me roar with laughter, made me determined to fight more about feminist issues and most of all enlightened me about OCD.This book is all about feminism and 16 years old cisgender girls realizing that the society isn’t that perfect for them. The Spinster Club series has also inspired the formation of Spinster Clubs across the UK and Ireland. NOT SO GOOD BITS: In some ways, this novel felt a bit predictable and I knew where it was going from the start.
